HOOVER AS REPUBLICAN NOMINEE A MOVEMENT lias been started to plaeo Hoover's name in the Oregon j)resi(lentiitl primary on the Ke pnlilican ticket. This is probably the first time in politi cal history that an American citizen lias been advanced as a presidential candidate by both parties. K:-(iovcrnor West started the Jloover boom for the democrats in this state, energetically supported by the Portland .Journal. At last, report the reuircd signatures had been secured. Now the Republicans want him. This strange phenomniena i'orceably illustrates the present decline of the old time political partisanship, and the peculiar appeal Jloover lias for the people at large regardless of party. Jn our opinion nothing would be of greater benefit to tht; Republican party than the nominal ion of Jloover. Au tomatically the party would Ik; cleaned out, vitalized and renoated, without a revolution within the party, as was necessary in Hoover would instinctively draw to him self the liberal and progressive elements of the party, and place them where they belong, in control. ' If Hoover is nominated he will be nominated in spite of the professional manipulators, and the old guard strategist.-:, he will represent tht; victory of a new political gene ration. AYith him will be American youth, American ef ficiency and Hi:1 thousands of thoughtful American citi zens, who, regardless of parly, want to see the man in the Wh'te House for the next four years, who is best fitted, by ability, experience and character for the all-important service of reorganization and reconstruction. It won't be an easy light. If Hoover is the h'epublican noniiiiec it will represent a bloodless political revolution of IVr-reaching consequences. Hut the obvious benefits of such a result, jusl il'ies every Hoover Jvcpublican making a hard fight for it. DETERMINE PUBLIC OPINION. T:JK members of the school board are convinced Hie people of .Medford are behind them in their support of Superintendent Davenport and his policies. A consider able number of citizens are equally convinced the people arc not behind them. ' As a preliminary move to (dear the atmosphere, and dotei'iiMiie just what popular sentiment is, we believe the plan of the I'areiit-Teacher's council to call a mass meeting confined to parents of students in the schools is an excel lent one. Such a meeting would be of constructive value iit the present time. .For the parents of students in the school are the ones nios(; vitally concerned in the present controversy. Their children are the ones lo he injured or benefitted by the school system. We have no doubt that any program en dorsed by the parents as a whole, will be accepted by the school board. H,'Hie parents are hopelessly divided on the proper course to pursue that fact will come out at such a meeting, if they are not; divided I hat fact, will also come out. True the edict of the school board that, no further pub lic discussion of 1 he school sit uat ion should be indulged in, will have to be overruled, but we still think this can be done without transgressing the police regulations. The latinos of the students are not all Holsheviki, and the mothers are not all hysterical neurotics. We have talked with stunt; of them and find they arc-reasonably sane, and inclined to look at the problem from rather a bi;oad angle. As long as the school board declines to accept a com mittee of arbitration, let the parents get .together and thresh out the entire question until they arrive at a plan of action upon which they can, as a whole, unite. Such a plan, we take it, will he pretty close to the plan that will finally have to be adopted. For no plan can succeed with out the support of the parents and no plan with their sup oort can fail. When men on the ground, of I 'resident. Wilson 's policies, rence, both urge his acceptance sciia'e reservations, people theii opinion of the situation at Washington, are given liret t v safe ground for their conclusions. When I was young the village doc said ailment . like the flu, which give the system such a ? hock, to causes plain were title. We sat in draughts, or wet our feet, ami went to beds of pain, and called rpoit the name of IVte, and that of Mike in vain. Hut now the doc. in sounding terms, another platform s rings, and all our ills are due to germs, the doggone measely thiiiL's. In fifteen years, or maybe less, that graft will look forlorn, and doctors then I make tin guess will laugh our germ's to scorn. The rules of lieall li of yesteryear look now like silly fads, and seicn 1i. ts sit up to jeer the wisdom of our dads. The doctor o1' the olden time had whiskers long and black: he couldn't hope to tarn a dime unless he had a stack. Hut now the doctor with a beard in deep privation squirms; the man with lambrequins is feared, for they are full of germs.
