What aboul the peraiancncc of the Medford Chamber of Commerce' , Members of the executive commit tee have prepared answers to thes: duestions and express thanks to The jduil Tribune for its co-operation in presentiiiL' them to its readers. Tin first is published todav. the others will follow this week, i Whv should Meill'oi'd have a Cham ber of Commerce I Every eitv needs an oruanizalion of the character of a Chamber of Commerce.. K.verv eitv needs an or Kani.ation which will hrimr the men and women together to do things that the eitv needs to have done. This yelling loircther , slimuhiles discussion of the problems oL the city, it discovers thimrs to do that nobody had ever thomiht of: it puts n united force behind the individual who would like to have things done, hut knows he cannot do them alone. Discussion of u eilv's needs leads naturally to the findiiiL' of ways and means of doine thins. This is what is meant bv the crea tion of the spirit of enterprise in a community. A city which has once aeouired this spirit will not permit it to die out. A wfll-inanned. well-planned Cham ber of Commerce provides that eitv with an organization and the ma chinery to make use of the best thotieht and enenrv of the citizens. A disorganized factory is a mennoe to the industrial htn n n a liabililv. An unorganized coinmun ity is a liability to the nation. . Kvci'v man and woman has a sur phis of lime and strength out of which to -jive lo his or her eitv. Vet it is the common experience, to lie lold. when ask'uer the cilizens .for some servii-e ftir (he common uooil. that he is loo busy with Ins own nl- lairs. Mill working together every day for a coiiiinon cause learn to uive. The in inplishmenls of a w.-l! or- tiiiuizcd Chamber of Commerce brin Iiiiuicdiatc and tangible results to. : city and its people, 'fhe storekeeper, the mill owner, the physician and Inwver. even the newsboy, sense the usefulness of a. sood Chamber of Ciiiniuerce : thev know it builds up the business of the. city by making it a 'butler place to do business in, and ii adds lo I he population by makiii'.' Ihe eitv a heller place to live in. 'I'll less the business and profes sional men of today insure Ihe pros perity and advancement of their eilv a few years hence, their sons and; daughters will inevitably tro to those cities which offer arcater advantages. A well organized Chamber of Com merce is such assurance. 'there is a verv wealthy man in Des Moines who for a lomr time could see no need for a Chamber of Com merce. After lunch effort he was in duced lo become a member. For the past five years he has subscribed $ 1(100 annually lo ils maintenance, his reasoning heinir, in bis own words: "I couldn't hire the people of this community lo do for mv private in terests what the Chamber of Com merce is doinir for any such sum as iMlMHl a year. Yet, united in the Chamber of Commerce, thev have in creased the value of mv property, provided nie with a contented labor supply to draw upon and widened mv markets bv makinir Pes Moines known as a eitv ot t'iiterpr;se and prosre 2 MILL TAX LEVY TO AID SCHOOLS Whereas more than one-third of all the school districts of Jackson county have made provision for but $ii20 for the purpose of maintaining their schools for an entire- year, and be cause of excessively low valuation of the prc-perty in their dislriets will not lie able to greatly increase their spec ial tax levies for the coming year for school purposes; and Whereas, a two mill tax upon the taxable property of Jackson county will briiiK an additional :iaO or more lo each district for each elementary teacher employed, which sum will en able those districts to secure teachers and tc give the children In those dis tricts an elementary education; and Whereas, 1S,27!I school districts of this stato and nation were on the lath day of February, 1!i2U closed be cause of !'jsuff!cient funds to pay !euc!ic'.':i even a living wage, and thus teachers vho have made preparation lor the work are hcing forced into oilier occupations for which they have mil maile iirena raticn : ami Whereas, our entire educational system has reached a most critical condition and Immediate financial aid must be secured In order to maintain Ihoso ideals so essential to the pre servation of our union. Therefore he it resolved, that this bedy go on record as favoring the passage of the proposed two mill tax measure for common school purposes, and that we do pledge ourselves to support Ihe same and to induce oth ers to support the same by yoling Hit yes for the measure on electica day.
