Smith has a slim chance of winning, hut vc opine I'at will know he lias been in a boss race when it Ls all over. K u irene Smith js one of the two or three, labor repre sentatives in the state legislature. Jle is not the brainiest man in the world, nor the greatest orator, but in' the last two .sessions he stood head and shoulders above the ma jority of his colleagues in both brains and oratorical pow ers, while in hjs sense of the real social and economic situ ation in this count ry, he was in a class by himself. Smith belongs to the (iouipers school of thought. "Which means he is a labor conservative. Ife is fighting as hard against the Uolsheviki within the ranks of labor, as he is fighting against the outlaw within the ranks of capital. llcprcsciithig labor he was under a severe handicap at the outset., but by degrees his fair-minded attitude won friends, until at Hie dose of the session he was recognized by such a close observer as Chapman of the Oregon Voter as one of the most capable, most fearless and most public spirited members of the house. , In fighting McArthur, Smith is fighting a type of the out-and-out anti-laborite. .McArthur has been one of the few public men with the courage of his convict ions. Unlike Mr. J foot he favors a law against the strike, he considers the labor movement the greatest menace to the country at the present time, und he neither asks nor gives quar ter to (lie organized brothers of toil. Therefore, the contest will be worth watching. Unless all signs fail McArthur will n. IW the temper of the country at, 11k; present time is all in his favor. Put that doesn't mean by any means that Eugene Smith will not be heard from. The time is coining when a public representative like Smith will be far more' valuable to Oregon than a public representative of the type of .McArthur. For. Smith in reality represents the only cure for social revolution we have that is the public official who has Hie sympathy of labor because he has lived with and sympathized with labor and at the same time has no animus against capital, has no desire to see tin; present economic system over thrown, and thus can, through his efforts and endeavors, construct a bond of union and accommodation between them. iMeArthur carried to his logical conclusion means revo lution, Smith means evolution; .McArthur means a fight to tho finish between capital and labor for class control. Smith means a fight 1o the finish between capital and labor for a square deal for mutual control. McArthur is the man of today, Smith is the man of tomorrow. A $150,000 church to be known as the People's Temple will be greeted with enthusiasm by the people of Medford and Jackson County. Theology asitlev two of the most important assets in any community are good schools and good churclKjs. Such an institution, under the leadership of a progressive and enlightened leader like Rev. Sasnett, should be of great benefit and value to the entire community. . Hoot and Hoover both favor prompt ratification of the peace treaty with concessions from the Wilson wing, They are both for a liberal labor policy, they are both for an in ternational court of adjudication. In fact, it looks as though they belong to the same party, while Sherman, Horali, Johnson, Reed, et al, belong to some other party, not vet formed. Governor Edwards will fight for a wet plank'in the democratic platform, which suggests that difference of opinion are not exclusively the properly of republicans. tm2 The Bank of Absolute Safety The NEDTORDrknoNAxB Twins "Work promotes Thrift These two produce Wealth Idleness and I'overty are Twins. Every man is a fighter, though he may not be a pugilist. His daily task is his fight and he needs to be fit and ready for it. Constipation to the business fighter is the "out-of-condition" of the pugilist. Constipation not only makes the busi ness fighter dull and slow, and unfit for effort, but it is the "lowered guard" that leaves the opening for the jarring blows of serious diseases. 90 of all diseases have their origin in the intestinal canal in constipation. Constipation not only causes the gen eration cf poisons, which are carried through the system by the blood and attack it from within, but also by thus lowering the general stamina makes the weakened system an easier prey to harmful germs from without. t By an entirely new principle Nujol keeps the poisonous food waste moving out of the body. Every other form of treatment either irritates or forces the system. Nujol works on .the waste matter instead of on the system. Nujol prevents constipation by keep ing the food waste soft, thus helping Nature establish easy, thorough bowel evacuation at regular intervals the healthiest habit in the world. It is absolutely harmless and pleasant to take try it. Nujol is sold by all druggists in sealed bottles only, bearing Nujol trade-mark. Write Nujol Laboratories, Standard Oil Co.
