It is doubtful if there has ever heed such a great movement of in vestors and speculators into any class of stocks as that which is now pouring into the petroleum industry. This is especially true of the shares of new companies formed for the purpose of producing oil. Within the last six months Wall Street and the public throughout the tountrv generally have turned to oil stocks with a simply amazing fervor. The "oils" have become the favorites not only of speculators, but of many who consider tcmselves conservative investors, and of brokers and appar ently of the most solid hankers. The name of oil has become magic, and the financial eomiminitv which a I'eiv vcars ago knew nothing and cared less about the oil industry is now workiug overtime gathering informa tion nod compiling statistics regard ing the position and wonderful pos sibilities of the new industrial and fi nancial giant Oil. The completeness of the change is well illustrated by a brief conversa lion which the writer had n short time ago with Hie vice president of one of the richest and most consor vative banks in New York City. This bank is synonymous with all that is supposed to typify the best and most solidl traditions of Wall Street. I had just told the vice president that I had recently visited the new oil fields of Texas, Ranger and Hurk- burnett. "I am gain? down there in a few days myself," he replied. '"We ex pect to invest down there. It's ab surd that we should have waited so long to get into the oil same. Think ot all the years handicap those peo pic at 20 Broadway (Standard Oil) have had over lis," and he looked out of the window regretfully as if 1 could not forgive the older men in the powerful group of capitalists- to which he belongs for not having sooner followed in the paths of John D. Rockefeller. Dissolution of the old Standard Oil combination, the almost stai tliii! increase in the consumption of oil, and, finally, the war. All these events have combined, so to speak, to take the lid. off the industry and open u up wide. Hcview of Reviews. EMPEROR CHARLES IS, . NOI A BANKRUPT VIENNA. The letter contained a' copy of para graph 1-11. page of the Oregon school laws of lillO. and also the following ruling from the state board of health: 'lf smallpox exists in a cumiiiiiuitv, the county or city hoards of health shall provide free vaccination for persons desiring pro tection against . infection. When smalipox exists in a coinmumlv no child shall be permitted to attend school without presenting satisfac tory evidence of having been suc cessfully vaccinated within, seven years." Ihc above ruling applies only to those communities where the epidemic actually exists. We are informed, that, even in such cases, it is not de sirable to resort to vaccinntion of all school children when only one oi' two segregated cases of smullimh are to he found. Vaccinal ion should be reouired only; where inilicatNius woulii lead our county health ollicer to believe an epidemic is liable to oc cur. When the oucstion of whether vac cination should be reouired. or whether a school should be closed for feur of an epidemic is raised, the ad vice of the county health officer should be obtained. We are in- tonned thta there is no cause tor alarm here in Jackson county ex cept in a few cases now well under control. No school should be closed just because one of tho larger schools finds it necessary to close. The ud vice of vour county health officer may he obtained bv calling- Dr. T. J, Mnlmgren, Sledford. (i-F-3. Teachers are advised thai no pu pil should be permitted to remain in school if he shows signs of having sore thront. headache, or if he need: to resort of sneezing or hns runiiini of the nose. It is usually best to re ouire n statement from the doctor in charge of cases whero n contagion is known to exist.' before members from that family are permitted to return to the soiled. Where instructions are followed and such matters arc carefully considered and watched, it will usually be far belter to keep the schools open. G. W. AC1ER. County School Supt. 'Feb. 7. 1020.
