HE issue in the lvuiiue Itiver Fish roiitroversv is this: are the natural l'e.soiU'ees tit' 1his state to he pre served for liulilie benefit or destroyed for private profit. There is the whole matter in a nut shell. Is wild life, fish, game,-the great outdoors, to be eonnnercialized for a few. or developed for the many . The cannery interests as usual are handing out soh steries about destroying one of the state's most valued industries, and forcing the humble commercial fisherman, and his frugal hard-working family, to seek sanctuary in the poor house. Piffle! The humble commercial fisheman is leading the fight to have. the river closed. The Josephine county citizens who have made a modest living in the past through salmon catching, have been put out of business by the very monopoly that is now posing as their self-sacrificing protector. This fight isn't against the commercial fishermen, it isn't against any legitimate business; it is against an old fashioned, antiquated public-be-damned salmon cannery that considers Rogue liver its pot preserve, und intends to exact its last pound of flesh, if it has to lake every sal mon and steel head in the river. The sportsmen of Southern Oregon. are a unit on this point, either the cannery must go, or t ing must go. Since the operation of tlu last closing of the' river, steel head fishing has steadily declined. At the present rate in another two years, a stee! head will be as rare in Uogue river as a four wheeled hack on the Pacific Highway. They talk about destroying a resource of the state. Ifow ahout trout fishing in Southern Oregon? Isn't that a resource'; Eliminating all sentiment and sportsmanship from the question, an elimination by the way which the recent Finley controversy shows the people will never ap prove, merely looking at the question from the stand point or dollars ami cents, winch brings more money and profit to the people of the state, good trout fishing and salmon fishing every year, with sportsmen coming from all parts ol tne country to enjoy it, or a cannery at the mouui oi me river grinning our excess proms lor a non resident millionaire 'I i . We say excess profits advisedly. For if the informa tion offered us is correct, closing the canneries at the mouth of Pogue river tomorrow, would result in actual deprivation to no one. lfoguc river has paid her toll and then some. Put it' a few individuals should suffer some financial loss it is to the interest of Southern Oregon and the e it ire state to have the river closed. The cannery men can be in demnified for their loss. If the trout once tro. no monev will bring theiu back. ' Unless every sportsman of Southern Oreiron is a liar. and we rather dolibt such unanimity, the steel head fishing in Kogue river is at stake. Either the canneries must (put or the commercial and amateur fishermen must quit. With this the issue who can question for a minute that in the interest of the state and its people both from the standpoint of good sport and good business, the wel fare of the people should come first. L COMMUNICATION. Wheat Was line u lluslicl To tho editor: Reference, to it news ilom in yesterday's Mall Tribune headed "Recalls Hertford When Wheat Sold for IIO Cents a Unshel" will say your ropm-tei' nut his wires crossed slinlitiy. drain anil slock raising; at that tiuiu were the principal sources of rovenuo and droves of cattle uud lions wero n common sight along tho county highways as well as in the fields, bands of cews rimmed the streets of Medford aitil foraged from tho ranchers' wagons, those largo black walnut trees on South Central avenuo wore at that time small whips of trees aud were protected from the cattle by stakes and slats. Wheat was the main grain product cf the valley aud was selling at lift cents a bushel instead of 30 cents as the Item gave It. Kggs atlc dozen, butter 30c lb., lard 10c Hi., and dressed pork as your Item gave It, was worth lie lb. 1SS1I was a very dry season and produco of every kind was scarce aud high, and there was a general complaint about tho high cost of liv ing. All south cf Kast Main slreet from the bridge was at that timo a wheat field and there was ono dwelling house on the north side about where Mr. Nye now lives. j The big snow storm mentioned de moralized telegraph service for some i timo but Ihero was r.t1; a power line or telephone lino broken. Water for Medford's fire protec tion was supplied by a littlo pumping plant and the littlo depression at northeast corner of the library build ing marks the spot yet whero tho water tower slcod. The lirlck business block built by Anglo & I'lynialo and now occupied by the Economy meat market loomed up at that time liko a skyscraper. practically all tho business houses on Main street were small fram$ buildings with shingled awnings built over tho plank sidewalks. I at that time kept a diary and many of theso items uro not a matter cf memory but copied from tt record written at the time. If tho city recorder will turn to tho records of the early 90's I think she will find copies of contracts made by the city for wood for the pumping plant and it will show that the price of seasoned body fir wood was about $:t.00 per cord aud one year as low as fil.lUI. The positioi) of tne national organization ot veterans is expressed in a statement just is sued by Kranklin D'Olier, national commander. "We must always clearly bear in' mind that any disposition on the part o individual mcnibars of the legion or of local posts to take law into their own hands, to regulate 'by force cr demonstration of forceful intent what is contrary to our interpretation of one hundred per cent Americanism cr to-act as self-constituted vigilance committees in disregard of lawful and properly constituted authority, is not only subversive of the principles and ideals of the American Legion but will weaken und tend to destroy our influence fcr good in this coun try," he declares.
