CallinR attention to the fact that
the last legislature passed legislation
authorizing the state highway com
mission to institute suit to' invalidate
the Warren Brothers' paving patents.
.Senator C. M. Thomas, of this cliy.
recently wrote the commission and
Attorney lleneral lirown asking why
lecal proceedings to such an end have
net iieen brought.
The legislature regarded the pav
ing patents as invalid, and the inten
tion of the legislation was that they
should he set aside in order that the
state might lay the pavement covered
by them without paying a royalty to
tlio Warrens, according to Senator
Thomas.
Sinco the enactment of the legisla
tion. Attorney Oeneral Brown has
rendered an opinion indicating that
.the patents are invalid, and the com
! mission has been withholding the
royalty charge in awarding contracts
on the pavement of the Warrens, but
j no suit has been instituted,
j Instead vt authorizing the Institu
; tion of legal proceedings the commis
sion is said to have been considering
a compromise proposal from the War
rens which would c-bviate any litigation.
Senator Thomas contends that be
fore tho special session is asked to
provide another r,(iUu,0U0 bond is
suo for highway construction tho sit
uation should bo cleared up iuhI inti
mates that the people will approve
no further highway bond issues un
less assured that the funds derived
from them will noU be expended In
paying royalties to paving concerns
Ijiw Is Quoted
Senator Thomas's letter to' Uie
commission reads. In part:
I The publication that a $5,000,000
Ponding Din would ue lnirouuceu ai
the special session of the legislature
called for January 12, 1920, leads to
the thought that it would be wise to
possess facts In regard to the work
ings of the legislation passed by the
last assembly, rather than to wait un
til the committees convene.
I would at this time inquire con
cerning chapter 17G of general laws
of 1919, and especially to sections
one and two, which read as follows:
Section 1 It shall bo the duty of
the attorney general of the state of
Oregon to investigate as to tho valid
ity of any alleged patent or copyright
on designs, material or use of mater
ials, process or mixtures in the con
struction of highways, bridges and
culverts, and to' advise said commis
sion as to the validity ot any alleged
patent.
Section 2 Upon advice of tho at
torney general that in his opinion any
such alleged patent Is involved or of
doubtful validity, tho state highway
commission shall, if it deems tho use
of said patent to be advantageous In
the construction of state highways,
uso or contract for the use of the
same in such construction."
The legislation was Intended to'
strike at tho "Uithulithlc" patents,
particularly the one covering tho mix
ing of the inateriuls, which many of
us believed to be invalid, and which,
if I remember correctly, the attornoy
general reported was of "doubtful
validity." '
I would appreciate the folio-wing
data:
What types of hard surfacing have
been used during 1919?
(live comparative yardage of each.
Has any claim or request been
made to the highway commission for
the payment of royalties for tho use
cf any patent in connection with the
laying of bithulithlc -pavement, or do
you apprehend any such claim will he
made?
The newly organictl Kami !-Vur..'au

13 at 1 p. m. at the .Medfont l'ublic
Library for the purpi:'.se of adopting a
permanent set of by-laws and electing
directors for tlte current year. At, the
last meeting, December lti, tempor
ary by-laws were adopted ami tem
porary directors elt-i tod.
The leading turmers of the county
are getting behind this cooperative
movement and if the attendance is
half as large as m.-.v expected it will
be possible to get the very best far
mers in the county lor directors.
The marketing worl. done by the
rami II urea ii this last fall has awak
ened the farmers to its possibilities.
Tho Kurm llureau Cooperative Kx-
I'hiinge is the marketing part of tho
Farm -Bureau organization incorpor
ated. This ineorporat iow was neces
sary to give it a b'al standing and
put It on a sound business basis
where It could expand its -operations
as demanded by the tanners.
Never before in the history of
.vmericau farming has a tno'vement
spread like the l-'ai-m llureatl move-
in. int. Ill three short years it has
grown from nothing to a great nu
tional organization. Will it succeed".
Ask yourself this question; your co
operation will answer for you. Not
only has it grown but it is still grow
ing and as its activities touch the
weakest part of the agricultural in
dustry, marketing, it is bound to
grow.
Agriculture in this country Is fac
ing a critical period. It must reor
ganize and adjust itself to tho new
order o't things. Without production
the people in tho cities will starve,
but before we am produce moro we
must first market what wo have to
advantage. This is where tho lffrm
Bureau comes In. It will market your
livestock anu farm produce and also
aid in increasing production. If you
as a farmer oi orchnrdist aro inter
ested in these things then you will be
at the meeting Tuesday, Jan. 13. Is
this movement worthy of some effort
on your part?
MARS1IFIBLD, Ore., Jan. 8. The
perennial threut from Medfprd and
other Rogue River valley cities to
close the lower Rogue to commercial
fishing has stirred up the residents
of Curry county as usual, and they
are out with a'determinatlon to block
any such bill at special session of the
legislature. Fishermen down there
have organized to fight, what they
term "hold-up" and the Marshflcld
chamber of commerce is backing
their efforts.
It is argued that no action will be
taken to put the greatest industry
Curry county has out of business. The
Curry county people can show an an-
I nual business of more than $200,000
and believe no legislature would par
ticipate In killing an industry of that
volume, the principal portion tit
which goes to the laboring class.

Weak Links in a Strong Chain ,
That's just what imitation parts are when they become a part of your
Ford ear. They look strong enough, but the met al isn't there the strong,
durable Vanadium steel that goes into the Ford ' chassis and every Ford
part. Ford parts are specially east and heat treated, each according to its
use. Some require a hard, i'iint-likc wearing surface, others need resil
iency, and some need just "toughness."
Ford metallurgists have been studying these problems for sixteeu years
and know just how each unit should be made to endure a maximum of wear
and tear. They know that best results can be obtained only by the uso of
special formulas for different parts, and that honest Ford parts wear from
thirty-five to one hundred per cent longer than counterfeits.
We carry complete assortments of genuine Ford parts for both passen
ger cars and trucks. And our garage is equipped to give careful, prompt
Ford service from minor adjustments to complete overhauls. Drive i",
it's bet ter to be safe than sorry. Come- to the Authorized .Ford dealer for
