Slight wonder the cannon boom in Paris, in London and far off Japan, for the human race is thrilled with the sense of a new world dawning. The significance of tho moment surpasses the imagination and transcends human speech. Sufficient until the day is the glory thereof. And yet upon sober contemplation there must be an undercurrent of serious doubt and apprehension. For after all the ceremony in Paris is only a ceremony. 1 One might compare it with the tract, with the iov and gavctv and jubilation inseperable from the occasion, but with smiles srlisteninir with tears. when one tries to grope the . Chiua did not sign the treatv. General Smuts signed under protest. The German delegates humiliated and broken, were not received as a peaceful compact, but as observing a form, under trusted to fulfil their obligations. As with the marriage ceremony, it is not the formal vows and sacred protestations; it is the spirit within the hearts ot the contracting parties, that decides the validly or that contract and the success of the future association, "What of the future? That is the unspoken sontiment of the sober, the mature and one momentous contract between individuals, so wth any other momentous contract between nations, one falls back rather foolishly perhaps, upon those elemental and simple sentiments, hope that the future may be tranquil, and raitn that the best will somehow be attained. And with this somewhat the bells, fire the cannon, retreating carriage. TY COBB LOSES FIRST PLACE TO CHICAGO. June 28 Roger Peck- inpnugh. New York, with an average of .395. has dethroned Tv Cobb. COMMUNICATION. Reactionary Explains Attitude To tho Editor: It is very likely that the Reaction ary would not have asked for space in vour - valued paper, tor many moons, if a rather nasty and peevish communication had not appeared in vour publication of June 20th. Ordin arily. I would have read this commu nication, laughed at it. and forgotten it the next moment if it had not con threat. An insiuation that I was threat. An insiuntion that I was afraid to write over my bwn signa ture, and a veiled threat that the worshipers around here knew how to "put the fixings" to anyone who dared to exercise the right of free speech in criticising their idol. The Reactionary is not, and should not be, an issue in any sense, locally or otherwise. There are bigger and more important things to discuss. The controlling reason for signing my communications. Reactionary, is that have no desire to see my name in the newspapers, and 1 have ulways had an ingrained dislike for cheap notoriety. There is ciuile n large num ber of people in this world who seem to have nil insatiable mania for see ing iheir names "in print" and. while no doubt manv of them arc might v fine people, thev always appear a bit ridiculous to me. For a thousand yours, greater and holler men than 1 have been signing their litcritrv out givings with a more or less appropri ate nom dc plume nnd I imagine thcv are going to continue to do so, en tirely unconcerned nbout the peo ple who like or dislike what thev hnvo to sar. The article ; written bv me, and which seemed to so greatly ex SIGNED. signing or the marriage con its attendant solemnity, the sudden emotional halt outlines of the future. friends who had entered into potential enemies, who were compulsion, and could not be declarations, not the solemn thoughtful world. And as in feeble observation, let us ring and shy the old shoes at the cite the iro of this worshipper, an peared in the Tribune of June the 10th. In writing what I did I had three objects in view. The first was to kid the editor of the Tribune n little for being fliint'lnmmcd nnd taken in bv the Wilson brand of high ideals, which onlv have worth, as a "magnificent example of the attractiveness of meaningless words." The editor seemed to get the idea that hud questioned his sincerity nnd be enmc right back at me with a left hunder that tarred my teeth, but he enmc clcnn nnd fair, nnd I never ob icct to hard knocks in a fair fight. XCv second object whs to good-na turedlv prod and jolly the worship pers n little, manv of whom are my personal friends. The third nnd con trolling obicct was to express, in ns few words as possible, niv condemna tion nnd disapproval of Woodrow Wilson and his doctrines, and niv contempt for n character that preaches one thing and constantly practices another. Now. the Reactionary is a free born sovereign ' American citizen. He knows his rights under the constitu tion and he wns early taught to know that the proudest boast in the world was to be able to suv I am an American citizen, sovereign, indc dendent, tinpiirchasnblc and unnfraid The founders of this republic well knew what thev were doing when they set torth the proposition, that nn American lltizen was a sovereii in his own right, nnd that tho men bo elected to represent him nnd to exe cute for him the processes of govern ment were his public servants: not rulers, or autocrats, or dictators, un derstand, but his public servants, nnd whenever I believe that any of my public servants are iisurinng an thority, or are grasping and grccdv for power and place, or if I become convinced that thev are making nn attempt to barter nwav our Amcri can birthright for a mess of interna tionnl pottage, or-if it appears to me that bv words, acts, or propaganda thcv are attempting to undermine nnd pull down our American institutions nnd ideals and substitute therefor an European state socialism, or Bolshe vik internationalism. I propose to cx crcisc the rights guaranteed to mc under the constitution, ns a sovereign, American citizen, to criticise them whenever I plcnse. and I would like to see the color of the man's hair who will attempt to deny me that which is not onlv mv right but my duty. Now. in conclusion, this bird who wrote the commiyiicition appearing in the Tribune of the 20th don't want to know mv name. lie iust thinks be does. However. I imagine if he wili go to the editor and show n valid and legitimate reason why he should be come better acouaintcd with me. it is nn even chance the editor will ac commodate him. ' REACTIONARY.
