prise him of her death but the tele
gram did not reach him until he had
arrived at Los Angeles, and altho

yesterday, he decided to come on

The first forest fire of the season
in the north end of Jackson county
occurred the first of this week on the
railway leading but from the Rogue
River Lumber & Box company's mills
six miles north of Gold Hill. But for
the heroic fight of the mill and tim
ber crews, assisted l)y the neighbor
ing ranchers, an extensive loss would
have occurred. A heavy Wind Was
blowing at the time and after burn
ing-over quite an area with some Iobb
to logs yarded along the railway the
flames were extinguished. The warm
weather and drought of the past
month is becoming a serious menace
to crops on unlrrlgated lands and the
forests in the Gold Hiil region.
