J Stockholders Notice Notice is hereby given that the annual meeting of the stockholders of the Home Telephone & Telegraph company, of Southern Oregon, will be held at the office of the company, 218 'West Sixth street, Medford, Ore . gon, at 3 o'clock p. m., June 3, 1919. W. H. GORE, 61 President. ; 'Notice . It Is enrnestly requested that all Soldiers of the late war assemble In uniform at 9:30 a. m. In the Medford park, Decoration Day, to do honor to tho fallen lieroos of tho United Slates of America. . i' ' MAJOR, R. J. CLANCY. DANIELS FOR PRESIDENT. A SOUTH CAROLINA newspaper susjsests Josophus Daniels, Secretary ot- tho-Navy for presidential candidate on the democratic, ticket. ' ; .; - Secretary Daniels enjoys tho confidence of the entire country, maintains thissonthern luminary, and is head and shoulders above any other democratic possibility. Presi dent Wilson will not run again, and even if. ho. would could not bef elected. His service to his country and the world has forced him to cultivate too large an anuv of enemies. He eoiild not get the German vote or the Italian vote, the Irish vote, or .the Catholic vote, and of course ho will ha ve a united republican party against him. HetTetary Dan iels, on the other hand, would enter the race with no or ganized opposition. He is a good talker, a capable execu tive, a splendid mixer and a fine gentleman, lie is the strongest possibility on the present political horizon. The above, sent to us by a friend in the south, empha sizes the sensational apotheosis of the Secretary of. the Navy. Only a short time ago Mr. Daniels was the scape goat of tlie party. Commodore Josophus of the Good Ship "Piffle" was, to express it bluntly a "joke." His bonedrv navv, his knitting circle in the forecastle, liis efforts to improve the navy's- morals rather than its marksmanship, raised a vociferous demand for his re tirement. ' ' ; : The war war came and everything changed, including Mr. Daniels. Instead of trying to run the navy on. his own fresh water ideas, Sir. Daniels showed the good sense to leave the practical details to experienced navy officials. Instead of giving advice, he took it. Instead preparing for a Chauiauoua, he prepared for war. And when the conflagration finally reached these shores,, the American people were gratified to. find their navy was ready to meet it, did meet it, and showed itself to he a weapon'in Uncle Sam's equipment, that coiUd be absolutely relied upon. Nevertheless we doubt if many people will take this Daniels boom seriously either in the north or south. , Sec retary Daniels has done well and his rise in public favor is picturesque, but there is a deep founded suspicion that the qualities in the Secretary of the Navy which nyule this possible, are. rather negative than positive. And negative qualities are not the qualities demanded in the' chief ex ecutive of this nation. t - ; The Outbursts of Everett True BylCONDO 1l " ' ' L COMPANY WILL ENLARGE PLANT The Bardwell Fruit company , re cently negotiated the sale of: 'the entire crop of apples on the Sunny brook orchards owned by li. D. Har ris. The crop is estimated at iabout 5,000 boxes of Spitz and Xewtowns. Mr. Harris says that the price is very satisfactory and is well pleased with his contract. In addition to the above deal Mr. Bardwell has also closed this sea son's Cuban- sale covering Cornice and Anjou pears for the coming sea son. This is the third consecutive year, that the Bardwell Fruit com pany have handled, this deal and past seasons have proven very satis factory. ' The highest prices realized on both Anjou and Cornice for the past two seasons were made by ex port sales to the Cuban trade through the Bardwell Fruit company. Owing -to the phenomenal growth of the BardVell Fruit company since its advent in the fruit business in 1917 a large addition is to be added to their present plant on South, Fir street which is now .one of the lar gest and best equipped plants In the northwest. Construction will ' com mence at once and the building will be completed In plenty ot time for the present crop. The Stewart Fruit company will continue their efficient marketing services for the local company and they are now making a thoro canvass and advertising campaign in the east for Rogue River fruit.- ' L !
