repealed for the population ot the

spigot In the barrel and will not take
it off." ,
"It is a calamity In that it tends to
. slacken the moral efficiency of an
entire nation, a moral efficiency that
had reached a very high, degree of
moral outlook and stability. For war
purposes we drew a great tone of
purity and sobriety around the mob
ilization ' camps, denied ourselves
many pleasures and luxuries and all
for the highest Ideals. Has the time
come for the slackening of the moral
bonds of a nation? Are we to Judge
that, the great peril past or seeming
ly so. we are at liberty to resume
practices that border on the evil and
a whole nation to be encouraged to
recede from the high plane of noble
living that the crisis gave birth to?
Is a little beer and wine to be' the
type of living that Is to exalt America
and give health to her soul?"
. "Here is a request that is open to
such construction, by the enemies ot
sobriety, as to apparently maintain a
position not borne out by facts. The
alcohol in beer and wine is no dif
ferent from that In whisky, except in,
quantity. , It is poison Just the same.
Drunk on whisky and on beer differ
only in point of time consumed in
acquiring the Jag. Two glasses of
2.75 per cent' (by weight) beer will
carry into the blood as much alcohol
as an ounce drink ot whisky. It is a
blunder that puts into the hands of
the anti-prohibition forces just the
club they have been trying to wield
for a long time. The president's atti
tude Is indefensible from every stand
point and misleading. No explanation
that can be made can be flattering to
him.,
"A most serious blunder in the
face of the creat problems of recon
struction. The hnihest efficiencv of
our citizenship is a demand in a day
of such vast import. Clear minds,
steady nerves and invulnerable moral
vision and conviction are the onlv
means of salvation for the creat
world todav. Beer befuddled brains
will muddle the whole business of re
construction, add, dnilv to the re
cruits of the ranks of violence and
disorder.- Whv do the authorities
close everv saloon at the first siim of

erv industrial center.

Germany as soon as peace is signed.
The jubilant whistles of San Fran

No we will not repeal the law for
America is for Americans and everv
man who takes the oath of allegiance
from now on renounces in heart and
in fact loyaltv to everv other flae and
land and becomes American entire, or
be goes back to his beloved land
where he can have without betrtival

battle and we will whip her in the
field of sobriety and decency and
there will bo no beer and wine in
America after July 1st." . .

117 insurance money from the Phoe
nix Insurance company, was overrul
ed today bv the United States circuit
court of appeals, and trial of the case
ordered. Following a fire March 3.
1903. the firm was paid the insurance,
and alleged it was later forced un
der duress and bv threats to return
the money to the insurance company.
It was charged that a committee rep
resenting 40 insurance companies
forced the merchants to refund the
monev and threatened cancellation of
large amounts of additional insur
ance. .
