For Bale by Medtord Phurmucy. A YANKEE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS. I V Til 10 wnt' hadn't dulli'd bolls would be ringing, flying today. For America i tlic first nation to fly across the Atlantic ocean, a Yankee naval officer is the Christopher Ooh:mhus of the Twentieth Century. ' '.- Landing at the Av.cres doesn't officially complete the trip for the European mainland must he touched. Hut with the 1200 miles oF mid-Atlantic safely crossed, the 800 miles remaining to the coast of iPortiigal should be promptly and easily negotiated. The result is a splendid tribute io American. enter-' prise and efficiency, and another feather in the cap of the American navy. For this was officially a navy project, the. entire resources of the.department being placed at the command of the aviation fleet. The navy lias demonstrat ed its capability, in war, now it shows its efficiency in peace. ' ,: - i" . : ' ... And haven't we also evidence here of the fitting sub stitute for the. utilization of that combative instinct which has so often been an excuse for war.' Men are fighting animals so they mnst fight each other, this'has been the biological excuse of the militarists. But here we have an engine fitted for war, originally constructed for war, de voted to the constructive, forces of peace, contributing to human 'enjoyment, cementing more " closely the nations of the' world", in a sense.-destroying that geographical iso lation; which is Vnd . has always been such a Ijreeding source of uusuuderatafeding and stimulus for conflict. X 'Instead .of fighting each other, fighting men antiwar machines of two great nations, Groat Britain and the Ujuted fcitates,, are" fighting the forces of Nature, which since.the origin of the Human race has made impossible air; transportation across the sea. While the initial hon ors will go to one nation, all nations will later join in perfecting the medium, in' rendering -ictory over storm and wave and the force of gravity, complete. Isn't this method of stimulating those - elements of courage and manltf fortitude, necessary to every, progressive and virile nation superior to the method of horror, destruction and carnage, which has just left Europe a smouldering ruin and ajiouse of sorrow and mourning! I : COMMUNICATION. ' - I Answers Mr. Conger, To the Editor: -Your issue for May 15th carried a communication from Mr. H. . Con ircr that was certainly a surprise to inc. I did not think that there wag a man left in the valley who had the nerve to expose himself to the ridi cule of both the friends" and oppo nents of irrigation bv mnkins such absolutely foolish and preposterous statements as he made over his signa ture. In making such statements he should at least had the irood judgment to have veiled his identity bv usinir a pen name such as "Reactionarv." for instance. : Jfr. Conner states that: "Anv per son, of ordinary intelliirence knows that you eould not benefit erain by irrigation." ; I am perfectly willing to admit that I am abnormal, but I know that I can double the yield of grain on anv farm in the district with the aid of water, and I know it be cause we have done it on the ranch south of Medford. If Mr. Conger would take the trouble to drive out that wav soon. I can. show him fall sown barlev . that three weeks ago was scarcclv knee - high; "nnd had started to lire close to the ground. Three weeks ago it was irrigated, and todav that barlev is breast' high and in bloom and shows the finest pros pect that I have seen this year.' An other part of the same sowing that was not irrigated is standing where it was and is very inferior. Then there is a piece of spring sown bar lev that three weeks ago' seemed to be doing -very nicely. A part of it got some of the run off from the fall sowed niece and todav there is a dis tinct line between the irrigated and non-irrigated parts, the former being a dark hcalthv green and six to eight incl;es higher than the latter, which is lighj green in color arid shows very nlainly the lack of mois ture. , . . ,, . Mr. Conger also boasts of socalled stands of alfalfa that have been' on the same ground continuously for 30 and 0 years, i This statement con demns him and shows his ignorance of the laws of nature and the! rules of good ! . farming. It .is , common knowledge that the greatest value of a leguminous crop lies in the utiliza tion' of. the fertilizing and soil 'build ing power's in preparing tlie lurid 'for, and increasing (he vicld of oilier crops. Nitrogen in the soil lsjVcr.v hard to hold as it is bofh1 soluble' and volatile, and within a couple of sea sons after it has been stored bv le gumes unless it is picked up by other crops it will fiuve gone back to the air irom whence it cume. It is sate to Bay that the losses in nitrogen value alone m the above mentioned holds would be as great, if not great er than the proiils therefrom." ; Mr. Conger discourses verv ."learn edly" on subirngntion and its in fluence on uliulin. I can show him a little patch, about 75 feet souare, that is located in one ot our fields and that is elevated about eight niches above its surroundings and as a eoneauence'.it. has. never: lin d a drop of: water on ils sHriuec except as it tell as rainA The rest hud been irrigated for thr to Mr. Conger that ridge, should he an onsis in ,n desert us it certainly would get suhirrigulion with water oh four sides of it:. but as a malt ol iiicl tliiit little riuge. has not pro duced a third of, a crop since it was planted three veiirs ngo nnd it is get ting poorer while the l'est eels better cimll vcarf Mr. Conger does not seem to know Unit plants do yd lier cent ol llieir I'eniling iij Mie Hiirfuco Hi inches t soil iiiid that llib inoistiiix1 liuist be onv emotional MiseeiHiliilitii's, eannou booming, and Hags there and not eu;ht feet under the ground for them to get the benefit of it.: ..' '- ! .-.- ' . ' . Another thing that he has over looked, is that there is not 'enough capillarity in the grnnito soils i( the western part of the district to draw water enough for good plant growth over four feet from the water table. The optimum water content in sundv soils is found about J inches above the water table:in a fine sandy loam, about 24 inches: in a clav soil about M0 inches above the,, water table. These figures have been lake trom standard authorities and were obtain ed and proven by careful experiments. Mr. Conger seems to shv at !i7" per acre for Water, but that is be cause he knows nothing about it. We have not one suimre inch exemption on the lb'0 acre farm and orchard south of Medford nnd the water sup ply, at its best, is hut a make shift, but if it was the only possible source of supplv and someone wanted it, and should offer us $750 per acre fijr that right, binding lis to farm the plaec dry. we would certainly turn it down. Mr. Conger does not seem to wor ry much about his brothers in the orchard business, ns he calls them. Rut he mnv have this assurance now. that when irrigation is obtained his brothers in the orchard business. will Be delighted to buy his property and the property of others . kickers .to plant more orchard on -' In regard to miestion of the Fed eral land bank refusing to loan on district lands if the bonds carry would sav. that I am acounintcd with Mr. Hiird and that when I see the of ficial notice I will believe it and not till then. ; Mr. Conger would like to know whv some of Medford's capitalists have refused io loan any more money in the district until the thing is knocked out. I have given them credit for enough intelligence to know thn't when irriga tion is an accomplished fact that the soft picking of the lean years will be a thing of the past 'and the ten and five stuff a mutter of ancient history. . Mr. Conger speaks of fighting this to a finish, and he and his associates rniiv rest assure that the fight will go on iust ns ldnr as. thev have! a dollar to fight with or until thev arc licked and licked' right: and then enough longer to piit a gwod irrigation ivstem onto . the Medford. district. When that Is done nnd. not till then, will we hit the band wagon for per manent vrospenty and sound- prop-, crtv, values. -', I HOWARD 'A. UUJJ. Medford, Ore.,' Mn'v'lB.1 13J!: !
