V A CARTOON O NCE tipon a time a magazine printed a thrillini story about a forest fire m sin. The hero and heroine were surrounded by flames except for a narrow strip through which a railroad ran. There were two engines on a side track, one was a large locomotive and the other a donkey engine. Neither had steam up, the question was which.one should bo selected. The former could make greater speed and was less liable to break down, but would require double the time to get under way. The latter wasn't much to look at, but "was seaworthy and could be quickly fired. The hero was for the mogul, the heroine for the donkev and wlulo they do bated the flames crept nearer. Finally the heroine, with rare femiinne decision, stoked up the smaller engine, while the hero fumbled with the larger, and just as the flames reached the last clearing, the young lady pulled open the throttle and sped out of danger with the hero having his hair singed somewhat unromantically on the tender. With a little pictorial application this tale could be framed into an effective illustration of the present sit uation regarding the 1 Paris peace conference and the league of nations. Label the larger engine the league ot nations we might get; the smaller the present draft; the flames of the forest fire, the flames of Bolshevism, the hero and heroine the allied disputants, and wo have a sit uation that presents a valuable lesson upon which the people may ponder. The imperative necessityegardiug the peace confer once is speed. The present medium of transportation may not be all that everyone might desire, a more care fully constructed instrument might insure greater speed and better security, but the important question is wheth er civilization is going to be reduced to embers and ashes, or there is to be a get away while the flames are still out of reach. No doubt the hero and heroine above were married and lived hapily ever after. If a similar happy fate is to be the lot of the allied nations, then some nation must have the courageous decision of the young lady, re trditws of whether or not the flowing locks of an ardent adtiiivor-'Are.-slightly singed thereby. i Midline says the new communism only recognizes in dnslrios essential to social . progress, . and yet it Is an nounced that .Jhe Moscow soviet has established a govern mei.it soap factory.
