OF hgger-squhgl HIST0RYANDHAB1TS CALIFORNIA 'I 6 J :lJ , Tho California ground squirrel Is ' probably known ..by sight to more people than any other one of our tour hundred kinds ot native mammals. It Inhabits open ground In well-settled . territory and It forages abroad during the daylight hours when Its movements are most likely to attract till ontion, (Numbers are to. bo seen from tho windows of passing trains, end the traveler by automobllo Is often thrilled by the narrow escapes Of those heedless Individuals which Vash. across the road immediately In advance -of him, not infrequently to their own undoing. Then, too, this squirrel has, perhaps,: been more widely- advertised than any of i our other mammals, A few years ago It came Into prominence as a proven disseminator of the dreaded bubonic plague, and it has become notorious tor Us exceeding destructiveness to cultivated crops. r The erm "Digger Squirrel" ; is often applied . to this species, more especially in the foothill and moun tain regions, In recognition of its burrowing habits, to distinguish it from the tree-inhabiting gray and red squirrels. Tho book name, Boechey Ground Squirrel, much used in the literature relating to it. Is . derived from the accepted scientific name Cl tellus beecheyi. This name, beecheyi. was bestowed upon the animal by its original descrlber, ' in honour of the able and scientific commander of the 'Blossom," Captain P. Y Beechey. The British ship "Blossom" cruised the Pacific ocean northward even to Bering Strait during the years 1S25 to 1S2S. Collections of specimens were brought back from many local ities visited, including San Francisco and Monterey; among these specl . mens was one or more- of the squir rels in question. These werg evident ly preserved for the most part by Mr. Collie, surgeon of the ship, who is quoted by Richardson as stating that r Guy Conner I , ff ! In the. early Investigations on tho digger squirrels, grains wcro soaksd or 'boiled in strychnine solutions with tho idea of impregnating tho kernels with the poison. The squirrels, how ever, exhibited marked objection to the bitterness of grain so treated, and no amount of sweetening or "doctor ing" covered this detect sufficiently, to caus - them to eat the kernels, tho they hulled them out: -and tasted them.: -I 1 .. ; ; ; -,,; The squirrels' habit "of carrying grain in thoir cheek pouches, which is especially marked during the dry season, or when seeds aro abundant, was at this timo taken into considera tion. It was thought that if strych nine could be held in a readily avail able form in a coating on the surfaco of the.grain, sufficient of the poison would be assimilated directly from the cheek pouch to kill the animal, even tho none of the grain was eaten. This became the actual basis on which has been developed one of the most successful of all rodent poisons. An effectlvo poison' was only half tho battle. The method of dlstrlbut- j Ing it is quite as Important. . The first impulse in distributing poisoned grain, still followed by many, was to place it in the holes or in a Small heap at the very entrance of the squirrel's burrow. But squirrels do not look for food in these locations, and much of the poisoned grain is lost by being covered by the animal running over it. Mature did not drop the squirrel's food into the burrows nor place it in neat little piles in front of them; she scattered it in lo cations not always near the burrows. Accordingly, the poisoned grain Is not always near the burrows. Ac cordingly, the poisoned grain is not scattered on clean areas within three to ten feet of the burrows; around trees or rockplles, along squirrel trails and In places where the ani mals feed., The standardized formula result ing from these Investigations and the method for applying It, have been of Immense economic value to Cali fornia. . Used In the dry season and properly distributed, the poison is entirely reliable. If prebaiting with clean, unpolsoned barley be practiced in advance of poisoning, the squirrel We Advance Money ARSENATE Call or Plionfe for Terms -' f"V; ff. oiio evening, tho dead squirrels being courtesy California Monthly bulletin. ) pest can be practically eradicated by a slnglo poison treatment in ntiy glven locality. Tho common mistake Is In attempting to use the ' poison during tho wet season when rosiilts are less certain, tho even under such conditions It la among tho most ef fectual of strychnine preparations. In general use In tho state for the past six or seven years, it has very lurgoly replaced 'the uso of proprietary poi sons nt a small fraction of tho cost of tho latter: In clearing tho squir rel pest from valuable t agricultural areas, from Irrigation systems, from nut groves and grain fields, the ag gregate saving to tho state must bo expressed in millions. , COLD PATRIOTS ' Under the stress of a patriotic Im pulso thousands of us purchased Lib erty Bonds.
