VVIJ'J D1A Members of the Jackson county court and Representative Gore are nttttndlng.tho Bpectal meeting of the Htnte highway commission at Port land today, at which It Is expected the contracts for the construction of roads In Jackson county wilt be ad vertised for bids. It Is understood that the engineers have not complet ed their estimates which will delay ' the matter until the April meeting. The court will put in a vigorous protest against the route selected by Engineer N'unn from Central Point to Seven Oaks, and urge the original route selected, which follows the present highway north of Central Point to the railroad crossing, and then cuts thru the Mimms and Salade orchards, rejoining the highway at the latter place, and obviating the two railroad crossings. The route chosen by Mr. Nunn is a straight line from the Central Point depot to Seven Oaks, paralleling the railroad and running along the right of way.. This line is a littlo shorter, but or no benefit to the farmers of the section. . Largely signed protests are being wired the commission today from Medford and Central Point. MEET SATURDAY The nnnunl meetine of the Jackson County Live Stock association will be held at the uublic library in Medford Saturday March 20. following the sale of registered short horn cattle. There will be some important business to come before the association and all members of the association and all others interested in live stock are in vited to attend. There will be some Rood 'speakers from Portland. Cor vallis and other parts of the noth-west- . The election of officers for the en suing year will be part of the business. Each returned man from war ser vice is privileged to invite his sister or lady friend to the bic pnrtv. as the attendance must be limited ,to the capacity of the club house, and it is expected that from 400 to 500 persons will be present. There aro several hundred returned men homo from war service already. It is not nn Klks' affair, and no members of the Klks' lodge .except fathers Of returned men from service. and no members of nn F.Iks' family beyond the invited "sister or lndv friend," or members of the Parent and Next .of Kiii association will be pres ent. V The celbrntion will begin at 8 S o'clock and after a social time danc ing will begin in the commodious lodge room nt 9 o'clock. The entire club house has been turned over for the night for the use of the big patriotic gathering, and the Elk's riinnnv play ers, library and mnsnziup renders, billiard, pool ami bowling pliivers will spend Friday night out in their gar dens eating worms. ' Refreshments of cake, ieo renin and coffee will bo served in the big basement of the building, all the hun dreds of guests and entertainers be ing seated at long tables. There will bo no speechmnking except one formal and brief 'address of welcome to the returned uniformed men. The parents of the Parents' and Next of Kin association will act as the reception oemmittec to welcome the bovs. A feature of the night will be the flving of the association's service flag of 130 stars, which contains sev eral gold stars for those who died in service, and silver stars for those j who were wounded. . Altogether Friday night promises to be a memorable one for the, return ed soldier bovs from service, and the welcoming demonstration has been planned along lines preferred bv the boys, who almost unanimously desired to avoid another huge welcome dem onstration like the first one given at the Nntatorium shortly "after the re turn of the local unit of the 65th ar-' tillerv. . That delightful affair Was too big and the crush of humanity was so great that the soldiers in at tendance could not find each other, mnch elss anybody else. ; ' The only reciuest those in'charge make of the returned soldiers, sailors and marines is to come in uniform Friday night prepared to have a royal good time. ' BRITISH FIX PRICE OF 95 CERTS FOR SILVER . ; LONDON. March 25. The govern ment has fixed a new maximum price for silver dating from todav. It is equivalent at the current rate of ex change to 95 cents per standard .
