CI I FIRE CAUSED BY L After weeks of comparative Inac tivity tho ftro department responded to three alarms yestorday, two of tho blaxes being caused by tlue tires, and the third by the explosion ot a lamp In an incubator. The latter fire caused the only damage and roasted to a turn a number ot rabbits and chickens. Two ot the tires were on Beatty street. ' ' The first alarm ot tho day was sounded at 1:15 p. m., being caused by a flue fire at the Shutts residence on Beatty stroet. No damage. The next alarm came at 2:30 p. m. and was caused by a flue ftro at 2 2 North Front street, in the building occupied by the Eads Transfer company office. No damage was done but on account of the location In tho business dis trict thore was much excitement tor a short time. The last fire and the only serious one ot the three came at 7:15 p. m, and resulted in the destruction ot a frame shed on Beatty street, rented by L,. E. Bean as a rabbit and chicken rearing shed. It was . undoubtedly caused by the explosion of the lamp In the incubator, and before the flames were extinguished the shed was practically destroyed and a num ber ot rabbits and chickens had por lshed in the flames. Great swarms ot the 17-year locust will In fest the United States in late May and early June this year, which Is expected by scientists to be one ot the worst "locust years" on" record, Exports ot the department ot agricul ture, however, see nothing alarming in the prospect. Onco regarded superstltlously as a harbinger ot disostor, tho periodical cicada, popularly known as the 17 year locust because It comes at long Intervals, Is seen now to be no more than an ordinary non-poisonous In sect pest, which can do little damage It proper precautions are tukon. The chief Injury Inflicted by the insect consists almost wholly in chiseling grooves in the branches of trees for depositing eggs. Young fruit trees sometimes are killed, but tho damage genorally soenis greater than it actu ally Is; according to entomologists, and popular alarm Is out ot propor tion to the rea danger. Later, when the Insects are ready to begin laying, spray young fruit trees with whitewash. The department of agriculture has kept close check for many years of all the broods ot locusts and can forecast accurately when and where the pests will appear. Large regions will be affected this year where one brood appeared 17 years ago and in other regions which - suffered 13 years ago, the Btates including Ala bama. District of Columbia. Dela ware, Georgia, Illinois,- Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, -Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsyl vania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, Belief that the 1919 brood will be exceptionally large is based on the snappy arink. healthful, eco nomical and delicious Instant postum Only See It You built by one of power and speed Essex has been t fact that tho ilT-your 'I broud' coming out this year 'is , brood 10, perluips the largest ot the 17-yenr brood, and that brood 18 of tho 13-year family comes out nt the same tlino.
