Relatives and friends of the Med ford boys of the 65th artillery yester day received copies of the Philadel phia newspapers of Jan. 31, contain ing accounts of the arrival in that city from France of tho 65th on the transport Havreford. It was tho leading news item of the day and the leading newspapers of Philadelphia devoted ever a page to telling of the arrival of the overseas veterans and describing their splendid service and tho battles in which they took part. Tho accounts were Illustrated with pictures of the arrival and the 65th marching on tho streets. Pliiladel-' phia's welcoming ovation to return ing troops was all the more remark able In view of the fact that of tho 2197 men aboard the Havreford only 15 were from Philadelphia. Lewis while on his way to hie rooms in East Medford last evening. was hit by an auto and badly bruised as he was crossing Riverside avenue. He does not know who was driving the' car, and as it only halted tor a moment he did not get the number. He said that the auto was coming from the west and cut across the cor ner when It turned north and caught him as he stepped off the curb. . A man whose name has so far been withheld but whose residence is said to he Los Angeles was taken from the north bound passenger train last evening by Speed Cop McDonald, to gether with two suitcases containing 14 quarts of whisky. The prisoner is held in the county Jail at Jackson ville and It is understood that he will not be arraigned before Judge Taylor until Monday.
