United States senate"! jiulieiary . eoinunttee Tias fulled upon Professor von Maeli and others nueused of Oernmn sympathy in the propaganda exposure made by the agents' of the department of justiee to "purge themselves of the t'.mve of disloyalty." The senaturs want to know whether t he professor denounced the" sink ing of the Lusitania, condemned the invasion' of Belgium, protested the atrocities committed by the Germans, and other war acts, most of which wore committed before the United States declared war. their own patriotism f How many of them denounced the sinking of the Lusitania, condemned the Belgian invasion or Uevnian f rightfulness! Did they not for years dodge the issue and seek to excuse the Hun his hunnishncss on every occasion.?. Did they not attempt to pass laws com pelling Americans to surrender their rights at Germany's dictation, keep off the ocean and cease manufacture and sale of munitions onlv being prevented by the presi dent's forcible opposition1? ' Do not the propaganda United States senators were persons cited to purge themselves by. the senate? Do they not prove that, wittingly or unwittingly, certain sen ators played Bernstorff 's tainted game in a manner that won German approval? ' ' Senate committees have no right to conduct such in quiries as those now underway they cannot exonerate or convict any oue of disloyalty. Such matters are for the courts. But the senate has altv of the members of the seriate and shirks its duty. By a vote of 50 to 21 the senate this week "purged" Senator La Follette of Wisconsin of the charges of dis loyalty brought against him by the Minnesota Public Safetv Commission because of his speech ou the war de livered before the Non-Partisan League at St. Paul, Minn., Sept. 20, 1917 five months atter the dcelai-ation Of war not before it. Senator It Follette to this day, has never protested the sinking of the Lusitania, condemned the violation of Belgian neutrality or protested German frightfulness He has extenuated them. He has never said a word in favor of the war or lifted his hand to help bring victory to his native land, but he has, on many occasions, given aid and comfort to the eneriiy, and his' recent speech on Russia, championing the Bolsheviki, shows that he is still at it. ,; . . In his St. Paul speech, Senator La Follette: .charged that the United States went to war "to protect Morgan in terests," and "in order that rich Americans might ride on munition ships." As Senator "Williams declared, La Fol lette 's speech "was disloval inspirit, words, intention and effect, and was made with a set purpose." Denouncing his charges as "lies," the senator declared they were a calumny and slander upon the American people. ; And yet the senate "purges" La Follette, who cannot purge himself in the eves of the American people, and the same statesmen would by bulldozing aiid unwarranted coersion, force others far less influential, and far less guilty ot disloyalty to purge Soldiers Hold on To the Soldiers and Sailors of Amer ica: . . ; Approximately four million officers and men of the nrmv nnd navv are uow insured with the Lnitcd States eovemment for a rrrnnd total of al most tiiirtv-seven billion dollars.
