Scott has written Governor W'ithycombe culling his attention to the possibility of placing returned soldiers upon Jackson county land as follows: -My Dear Governor: I was much In terested In your plan to take over unused land in the state of Oregon for the use of returning soldiers. I believe It is a step in the way of progress, and I wish to call your at tention to tho possibilities In Jack son county. We have here about 2D, 000 acres on .the west side of Rogue Itlver not to exceed one-half of which Is at present In cultivation. This land can ho acquired at a very small cost. There is water aplenty going j down the river for irrigation pur poses wiitcn can be applied at an in finitlsinal cost in comparison to the benefits secured. A very convenient power site on the river that would develop 3000 horsepower, one-half of which would be sufficient to do the pumping by running tho wires upriver six miles to a convenient pumping site would furnish water for Irrigation, also light and power for the whole community and to spare, as tho power is only limited by the flow of water in the river and could ba doubled when the . river made a raise of 12 to L'O Inches. 1 take this opportunity of calling the proposition to your notice for inves tigation. West Sule f riiarmacy ' The K ill Store" Medford and Jackson county went over the top in tho United War Work campaign this morning with a total of $l.'J,ttU0 the exact quota. When all the subscriptions from outside districts were received, this amount may he increased somewhat, but no effort has been made to secure an over-subscription, and with the goal successfully reached, the drive is de clared formally closed. Altho the exact number of sub schibers to this war fund is not known as yet, there is reason to believe It will exceed that of any drive since the declaration of war. The local committee headed by Wm. G. Tait did excellent work, solicitors, men and women were tireless in their service for the cause, and the public responded generously and spontaneously. Because of the large number of subscribers and the tremendous amount of clerical work involved in listing them with their amounts, it has been found impossible to con tinue the publication of a list, until all the names are in. This procedure lia3 also been found necessary in order to avoid repetition, -and mis takes. As soon as the official list Is completed it will he given to the local press and published in its en tirety, probably the first of next week. PA IMS, Xov. 1!). Two hundred nersons were killed in an explosion at Wahn, southeast of Cologne, (ler niany, according to reports received here. WITH THE AMKHUWX FOKCRS IN' FHANVK. Oct. .'id. (CorrestHmd ence of Associated Pres.) For the first time in any war battlefield mnps have been, printed literally within sound of the roar of the biir nuns nt the front. A portable printing press for map making is one of the miiny outcomes of the war and it is iin American invention and has been in actual u-.e behind the lines of the American armies in France. The press wan carried upon n large truck and is moved from place to place with the corps headquarter. Accompanying the niap-makinir de partment ot each corns are expert lithographers and in the event of a rush order for a man of certain ter ritory, perhaps for a printed outline of ground being fought for at that very moment, it was possible for the Americau man makers to turn out n map about two feet siiuare in less than twelve hours. The designs were copied from mnps on n larger scale, completo set of these being carried hv each corps printing outfit. When a rush or spe cial order was received from the front usually a small map was turned out. this being followed hv a man ou a Hnrger scale if needed. Owing to the portable printing press invention it is now possible for soldiers in the front lines to he sup plied with maps prepared and printed the same day. almost within range of the heavy guns of the enemy. In addition to the portable map-making detachments the" American armv has an immense plant to Mint the larger and more detailed maps of nil parts Fiance or more parijcularlv the fighting ground us the Americans advanced.
