tfEDFOTtD MATL TRTTUNR, MEDFOKD, OTMXiOT, SATURDAY, XOVKMnET? 1, IMS i J PAGE FIVE I WITH THE AMERICAN FOUCICS IN FRANCIS. Nov. 15. (Correspond ent ABSocIatd Press. The country over which the American forces fought their way northwest from Verdune prosentB a picture of ruin, destruction and desolation. The villages tiro un inhabited and homes Beeni to be sep ulchered. Tom by mines causing hupe craters, gashed by bombardments which made hundreds of thousands of shell-holes and strewn with broken and abandon ed guns, wagons and heaps of am munition, helmets and all other de bris of four years of desperate fighting the whole route betrays the awful ef fects of war. ISarb Wire Everywhere Kverywhere, In every direction and protecting each slightest angle and nock, across the roads until torn away by Hhell or human hands, are countless strands of barbed wire, most of it rusted by the rains crazlly topsy turvy on its supporting stakes that have fallen to right and. left. "If it takes four years to win the war," said some' casual visitor at the front, "It will taks six years to roll up p wire that has been used in winning it." Take, for instance, the trip from ruined, desolate Avocourt northward to Malancourt and Montfaucon, the scene of some of the bitterest fight ing of the entire war. Avocourt w.ih in ruins before even the American of fensive Btnrtcd. For a solid mile northward tho roat! winds across foothills that once were covered with green trees but now are shorn and bare. Gigantic mines have torn the road in twain and gouged on: holes fifty and more feet deep, a hund red and more feet across, to gut around or across which engineers have had to exercise their ingenuity rnd the surrounding country, stripped 01 its woodn, has furnished tho roeK. Fortunately there is plenty of that. To either side of the road are the remains of what were oiice livable, comfortable dug-outs and building;?, blown into thousands of pieces by dis charges of explosives when the enemy retreated. Farther afield and as fnr as the eye can see across the low hills are, hundreds and thousands of kIioII holes, their craters overlapping, big and little holes from missiles of every character, that have torn and scatter ed the earth almost beyond the hope of redemption.' " Everywhere is the debris of the bar tlefield, guns, helmets, articles of clothing, piles and heaps of ammuni tion, broken-down and splintered wag- ens, caissons and trucks. And, if one goes over the scene sojm enough, bod ion awaiting burial. The comparison between Malancourt and Avocourt is striking because the former has suffered so much more, Buildings no longer have even a sem- nlanco of their former state. Where in Avocourt walls at least stand here and there in Malancourt everything ha been razed ns though with riyna mite, .and the crumbling remanants aro seized upon to rebuild the shatter ed roads and make them passable for the instatible armies ahead that must have more and even more ammunition, and food and supplies. Xo Population Iit-fl Neither Malancourt nor Montfnnean nor any one of the score of towns with in tho sector where the Americans operated has a single living Inhabitant hft. iln every direction is a waste of craters and up-torn earth. The- once beautiful wooded slopes and hills nre now torn and gashed, Great artillery bombardments have stripped the hillsides of all but the stumps of the trees which towered pathetically against the sky without branches or foliage, mere crippled re lics of their former selves. Many of them have been shattered by shell as by lightning, others cut off as though by bungling wood choppers unable to fell a tree cleanly. The reconstruction of Europe Is ad inittodly going to be a lung, hard tnsk far longer than the war that made it necessary. In time to come the mead do.vs and valleys between Avocourt and Malancourt will be green ana in. the trees of the Argonne forest will grow up as they did before 1IM 1. Hut as they all look now it seems very very far In the future before the ruin, the utter dest ruction, can be made go d and the former status of this por tion of France restored. WASHINGTON. Nov. lrt. Secre tory McAdoo's recommendation for downward revision of tho revenue bill to about $ti.Hio,uiiO.iO(i was for mally adopted today by the state fin nnre committee. Only two or three members, Chairman Simmons stated, favored a higher tax levy. AMSTKKIUM. Nov. Hi.-Oncen Mnrin Therein of I lav aria died mi i'ne-dnv, Hfcin'ilin- to the Ta-.-eMett of MmiH'ii. For sale by Medford ruannacy, ' ES GN BATTLE LINE WITH TIIK AM KKICAX TitOOI'S IN FRANCE, Nov. 16.- (Corrodpnii deifce of Associated Press.) Dugouts are popular at: homes for the staff's of American army corps and divis ions as their occupancy enables tho officers directing operations to be In close communication v.ith their regi ments in action. The staff of the second American division which assisted the French to drive the Germans out of K helms had its headquarters in Suippes for a time hut when the "push moved forward and the Germans were forced out of Souain it becanlc diffi cult to maintain closo laison between the American troops and staff offi cers. Souain was constantly under fire, so the Americans chose tho alterna tive of n dugout. They went almost to Souain, aud in the very midst of the desolation and destruction they burrowed underneath the shell cra ters and gaping mine holes and built themselves a tiny little underground house. The rooms- were so small that a dozen people would fill any one to suffocation, but the house was :iofe shell and bomb proof, imme diately the situation improved, for from the general commanding the division to tho orderly and dispatch runner who hourly risked his life by going up to the front, all were safe as long as inside. The corps dugout, of necessity a largo and fairly pretentious affair, is a rarity of rarities, and, with its electricity. Its running water, its heating arrangements and the like, it is distinctively an American uf fair. The divisional dugout3 on the other hand is an institution which all armies avail themselves of when convenient. 'Sometimes the real, genuine dug out is used as was this one in the shell-torn field of tho Champagne where personal safety is virtually the only factor involved. In other cases, especially In the Argonne for est and to a lesser extent in the Vosges ni.-.untains, both tho French and Americans, and the Germans, go In when possible for achilectural ef fects and house themselves snugly in chalet-like cottages and bunga lows which either meet tho supply of houses that do not exist, or substi tute for those that are Inhabitable or nearly so.
