s FOR DAILY SUPPLY AMERICAN IWULAT1XG MASK, ADVA NX' E ZONK. France, Oct. Ml. (Correspondence of (lie Associated Press.) The "uutmiuuie train' is one of the strunue devices wliich has sprufiL' out t the war. nnd there is nothing atiite like it in the whole TUiitiG of railway transnorlation. It has been developed hv the American military authorities here as one of the 'necessities of keeping m an au tomat ie dailv supply of food, font ire and all requirements, to every unit of the American expeditionary force in Krunee. To do this with unvarying regularity each dav. so that every man in every division stret -hinir over a vast area uloni; 'MH) miles of front, would have his daily needs supplied was a huge problem. The only solution was to secure ab solute uniformity, or n standardiza tion of truins by which the make-up would be automatic, dav alter dav. And out of this has come the "auto matic" train of the American armv. whicli is one of the wonders of Amer ican organization. IJke ItiK Jitf Watching the make mi of the "miNi mntie train" a they o forward to the American divisions on the fight ing front, is like watching some gi pantic jig saw puzzle, for there Is the same fitting together of confused i arts, until at last all the pieces form a complicated whole of 15 of these so called "automatic trains." fiO ears to n train, each train moving off to one of the American divisions. It was f sleepy village last Octo ber with 2.000 inhabitants, today it is the center of intense activity, with an Amerienn working force of 'J2.000 eleven times the population of a vear ago with 72 miles of vard trackage. 45 enormous warehouses, and railwavs radiatin" to every point of the long front held wholly or in part bv American troops. Last month 3'J.HOli cars were mov ed, or over 1.0(H) n dav in this stu pendous stream of supplies going forward to the fighting forces. Pulitiiol llilimrd imiiiiim liiliiur nl'fi- pcer, and Captain Bigger, regulating 'officer, explained the details of these automatic trains, and later there was fun opportunity to see the trains ns f embled like parts in a huge puzzle iind started on their way to the front. The basis on which the tin - tomatic trains are made up is as fol lows: Composition of Train Two ears of refrigerated fresh beef. Two cars of fresh bread. Seven cars of food comprised in the soldier's ration. Konr cars of fuel for cooking. Fourteen cars of forage for horses. One car of gasoline, mineral oil and lubricants for motors. One car of mail and packages. These are the fixed and Practically invariable cements of each auto matic train, the same wants of food and forage being repeated dav alter day.
