T I- I . - An intensely interesting letter was received by the Mail Tribune today from Dr. E. II. Porter, who is nt Worcester, Mass., describiiiy the epi demic in the east, the symptoms and effects of the disease, prevenfative measures, etc.. and ndvisinz that Med lord lake precautions. The letter l'ol- loyfs.- "Your issue of September 28 con tains an editorial on the subject of Spanish influenza, and from ils lone win lead your readers to believe that the" isease is not ft serious one. It is a new dfsease caus ed bv an' heretofore unknown bacilli, but has recently been isolated. "The onset of the disease is veri similar to that of an ordinary attack of erip, but much more sudden and severe. Many cases begin as a pneu monia, while others 'are sick several dnv before pneumonia symptoms no petit-: Those beginning as a pneumo nia arc usually dead in 48 hoars. The vaccines and RPritms which have heretofore been used in the treatment -. of erip are worthless in this disease. Dunne the imst'week we have secured a small supply of vaccine made from the new hnreilli and have irtocululed some of the physicians ami nurses who nre in. attendance on influenza eases, but un to date can not say what the ef-fc'ti-will be. Neither cap we do so until -the vaccine is obtainable in larger Quantities which will reouire sefeeral days lonirer. FRENCH CROSS SUIPPE. (Continued from page one.) OF FOE FIZZLES " -it j . LONDON. Oct. 12. Vie'ev ilAirnl Sims, speaking veterdnv 'at Lord Xorthcliffc's - luncheon for visiting American editors, said Hint the aver age number of enemy submarines on erating against merchant ships and tinsports across the Atlantic was about eight or nine hut that some times it ran un to 12 or 1:1. 1 hat was $11 the submarines die enemy could ,,00 mit nt n time, ne declared, Hround Hie llritish Isles, Vice Ad ilral Sims mi id there were about J,- be resumed as soon as the guns untl the transports catch up with the ad vanced elements, for a powerful push at the improvised German posi tions. Mennwhile lllo Hritish sweep oil the more northerly front has resulted in air extremely close approach to the city of Douni. Closing in on the sifuth, west and northwest, the Hrit ish are hnrdly more than a mile and a half from the center of the place through their capture of Cuincv and the announcement of Douai's fall at anv hour would not be surprising. , Kiitially sweeing advances arc be ing made bv the French in Cham pagne. The German front here seems to have lost its power of successful resistance and Genrul J'tain's troops have made a ouick advance of from three to four miles. The. important town of Vouzieres has been penetrat ed and the French line in Champagne has been brought up to a level with it far to the west along the Hctourne river. The advance in the Champagne now has reached a depth of nearly 1" miles since the FrancoAmericnn offensive was started on this front September 2fl, hardly more than two weeks ago. hiding markedly in the success of this operation and striking at even more vital German positions is the continued Arlnericnn attack in the Ar eonne and eastward in the Meuese district. The American first army fought its way northward vestordnv to the vicinity of Landries-et-St. Georges which apparently marks at least a mile mid a half's progress be yond the famous Kricnihildo line. .Today the Americans were again attacking, against such a determined resistance us to indicate plainly the -t'l.lizntion of the Germans that ;l:ev are' facing here a menace ti the snfe 'v of their entire position in northern I rance through the threat to their vi lli ( mmnnicuting lines ni-lhe Slor.t rtiedv nrta. The Ctrr.ian lines niong the Su'ppe river, ill the Champagne se'dor i.i frnh"!' hfive collapsed. : Allied troops have been atla"king the Austrian positions in the moun tain sector of the Italian front. This fighting nppears to have been lnerciv a local operation, bur the enmhat hi'' apparently been severe. NOTE READY MONDAY. . (Continued from page one.) German answer to President Wil son's note of Inquiry is ready and believes that it was handed to the Swiss government today. The newspaper understands that "the answer will make far-reaching advances and It Is hoped that the discussion between Germany and President Wilson will bring forth a durable pee for the whole world." It was stated by that newspaper that the notn was "carefully coasld ered by the war cabinet," 'Consisting of the chancellor, the vice-chancellor and secretaries without portfolios and that an answer In principle was agreed upon after a conference with the supreme military command. PARIS, Oct. 11. Semi-official summaries from comments In the Gorman1 (irSss, Issued tonight, Indi cate that Germnny, In answer to the demand for art evacuation of occu pied territory, will ask as an offset the evacuation of German colonies nnd occupied Turkish territory. Ae eordlng to Some German newspaper comments, Prince Maximilian will have no difficulty In announcing the adoption without restriction of Presi dent Wilson's program. Germany apparently Is hurrying to appear to be a democratic state. Po litical amnesty will he announced and a new governor will be appointed fdr Alsace-Lorraine. Martial law will be modified und a liberal minister of war will be named. The whole move ment Is oxpected to result In the establishment of a responsible minis try, which Is said to be only a veneer. - The rumor persists that these ministerial and governmental read justments have . been undertaken with the view to causing tho allies to regard Germany as democratic and to welcome her reply. AMSTERDAM', Friday, Oct. 11. While the German Junker organs be wail ".the demise and burial of glor ious old Prussia," and make dram atic appeals to tho shade of Ills marck, Berlin bankers todny notified their correspondents here that presi dent Wilson's first condition, the evacuation of occupied territories, is considered "not iY:ccptahre." Today's Cologne Gazetto already pours balm on wounded German feelings, pointing out that "If the enemy's overwhelming numerical superiority In men and munitions has overthrown all human calcula tions," the Germans have neverthe less proved themselves brilliantly capable and can never be destroyed as a nation. The posen Vencste Narhrle!itn editorially remarks: "The new chance;ior has dlrecily approached President Wilson, which At the rialto t omorrow only CAHMEL MYpds I IN THf PRODUCTION EifTW A.TfS riiKJ A kfA BROADWAY SCANDAL "J may seem surprising. The president has always been held up to desecra tion in the derma n press as a fanati cal war maniac.
