HALF BILLION A DAY i NEEDED FOR LOAN BAKER 10 BRING SOUVENIR STATUE ' FROM FRANCE PARIS, Oct. 7. When Secretary of War Laker goes back to America he will take with him a miniature bronze statue made of German can non captured at the Second Battte of tlie Marne, and symbolizing the defense of Paris. The statue, mounted In a marble base, is a replica of the one of heroic size that the students of L'Ecole Polylechnlnue, the big French mili tary school, are presenting to West Point. The big statue, also, made of German cannon, is to be erected at the school on the Hudson. Last April, when Secretary Maker made his first trip to France, the French soldier-students sent back with iiim a miniature of the statue for the students al West Point. Then, hearing ho was returning, they made another for him. Under the figure of a soldier, wav ing a standard and standing before a field gun, is an inscription commem orating the defense of Paris In 1814 as well as in 1914 and 191S. On the back of the base ts this Inscrip tion: . 1 "To the Honorable Newton D. Baker, American Minister of War, as a pysonal gift from tho students of L'Eeolo Polytechnlque, in fond mem ory of his first visit to Paris, April 0, 1918." The Ecole cadets first conceived the idea of presenting the heroic sized statue to West Point as a re turn courtesy for the message of greeting West 1'oint cadets sent to the French cadets when Marquis de Lafayette came back to France after his visit to America in 1S24.
