JF Ihoy are not pat ronized, they cannot operate and wo w ill aain face, the old condition of having to import all our flour and mill stuff and export our wheat and pav freight both ways on the wheat shipped the mill and on the flour shipped back. Tho farmer faces a difficult-problem in marketing his grain. The local mills help solve tho problem. The dairy men havo trouble in securing mill-cuds. If ali the wheat grown hero is nianufaeturod into flour, this problem i. solved. Railroad facilities are needed for troop move ments and war materials and supplies. The local mills help conserve transportation by saving car space and fuel. When you purchase flour made elsewhere, you are helping clog the railroads with unnecessary traffic, and paying unjustifiable toll in freight rates: you arc help ing support payrolls in other towns and discouraging those in your own community; you arcincreasing tho dif ficulty of the producer in marketing his product and raising the cost of the milk you buy by increasing tho cost of feed to the milkman. The valley is a small one wo are really all oik; com munity aifd prosper or fail together. What affects one, affects directly or indirectly, all. If the farm is not pros perous, th(! city canot.be. If the producer docs not do well, the middleman and the consumer suffer. It doesn't make any difference what part of tho valley you are in the interest of one see! ion is the interest of all. For tho saving of transportation and tho building up of local indiisi rios, the state food administration or tho state council ol defense, or whoever it is that has the au thority, should forbid during the war, in every locality, tho importation of products that can bo made at homo. There is no reason why Portland, or Washington,-or Molilalia or Minneapolis flour should bo imported hero and by other towns and local wheat exported to be re imported as flour and feed. There i-i far more justifica tion for rtuch an order than tho proposed closing of all es tablishments at (i o'clock in the evening. , For the common good as well as helping win the war local merchants should refuse to handle any but local pro ducts, including flour, when they can bo obtained. The prices are fixed, including the millers' and tho retailers' profit. The latter cannot make any more profit on a sack of .Portland flour than he can on a sack of Mod ford, Cen tral .Point, or hagle Point flour which roallv more lood ingredients than imported Hour made in tho larger mills and costs less.
