A misunderstanding seems to exist
as to the office hours of the city
superintendent of schools. "The day
is past when a superintendent should
be employed for clerical and mere
office work In a city school system,"
raid .Superintendent Davenport Tues
day. "Therefore it is my plan to
spend the hours from 0 to 12 in
supervision of the elementary schools
ai: then a part of the afternoon in
the supervision of the high school
department and in conference with
the fnslrur'tors and students. On the
other land it Is the plan to hove
patrons and all others Interested in
the schools have ample opportunity
fir the regular office hours which
will be. from 8 to 9 a. m. and from
3 to 4 p. tn. We cordially Invite the

The change In the daylight saving
plan which has been In force since
.March SI st, last, and the time for
turning the clocks back an hour to
the time formerly iikvI, will not come
on October 1st. According to the
daylight sating law passed by con
gress the time for selling the clocks
buck will be 2 a. ni. on the last Sun
day In October, ami this time will be
continued In force fur the next six
months, when the clocks will be set

60 DAYS IN JAIL
FINES. OF $250
The three Portland bootleggers ar
rested last Thursday forenoon In the
Siskfyous after their ear had broke
down and they had placed 175 quarts
of whisky and three dozen bottles of
beer In concealment on the mountain
side, were sentenced .Monday by Jus
tice Gowdy of Ashland. Kach was
sentenced to serve GO days in jail
and given a fine of $250. .
Prosecutor Roberts declares that
the prisoners have not Implicated
higher ups in Portland, but it Is
known that the government is tak
ing a strong interest In the tease and
lias a representative investigating.
There is a rumor that federal offic
ials plan to arrest the California
saloonkeeper who sold the booze to
the Portland men. The prisoners sen
tenced are Barney Perlman, Morris
Minsky and George B. Golde.

The fourth liberty loan bond cam
paign for the Medford district Is now
in full swing and up to this morning
tho total so far subscribed was ?GU,
000. Of this sum $25,000 was sub
scribed yesterday voluntarily and
thru the efforts of 60 solicitors, men
and women, who started lo work
-Monday forenoon. ,
Tho $2f.,000 subscribed Monday,
the Tlrst working day of the cam
paign, is $.1,000 ahead of the amount
raised the first day of the previous
liberty loan campaign. The other
$.13,000i so far subscribed all came
from voluntary subscriptions
last week.
