Mr. Jiuliis jiow declares that he intends to pull up the railroad and sell it because it is an unprofitable invest ment and siitftfostH that it Mrdiord and Jacksonville want the railroad to remain, it is up to the two cities to pur chase it. This is quite a different storv from that told bv Mr. Bullis a week ao, when he declared that the war depart ment had commandeered the rails and that although he had made a trip to Portland to endeavor to secure a modi fication of the order, he had been unsuccessful and had no alternative. Three miles of rails were sold through a Portland broker, to spruce contractors. The war department states that the requisition was issued after the sale had been made, and that as long as the rails were to be sold anvwav, me government neederi tliem. It is, of eourse, out of the question, for either Jackson ville or Mediord to buy the railroad, and the cities are within their rights in protesting the junking f fle system and in taking whatever action is possible' to prevent it.
