S. em ployment service Is pressed very hard this week to secure hr.nds for maiiery work, fruit picking, etc. The opening of the school season has re duced at least fifty per cent the force of available boys and girls. It Is vitally Important that the local office secure as soon as possible a list of women and girls who can take on this work. I n less help Is secured at once, particularly in the canneries, it will mean a big loss in cannery products. This community so fur has responded admirably to the call for women workers ln the orchards, and the word has gone out to the other communities that the Rogue River valley has been able to harvest tho bulk of its fruit with the help of 150 to 200 women and girls. while In several other localities has been next to Impossible to secur sufficient help either male or female It Is desired to continue this good record for the balance of the season and get in line for next year's work Next year, even more than this, the help of every woman, girl and boy will be needed and if possible the community must get thru the local work without calling on any of the outside communities. Owing to the steady call for men in actual war industries, and the fact that the next draft will undoubtedly hit us strong, the necessity of each and every able bodied person, male or female, who Is left, putting his or her shoulder to the wheel is more apparent than ever before. "Lconl co-operation" is the slogun for the balance of this sea son and for the next year'B season as well. TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY INDICTMENT FOR ihe Josephine county grand jury lust week returned an indictment against George K. Kuunders, former president of the Rogue River 1'ublic service company, cbilririn'' him with the embezzlement of $2,281 from the company in 1913. It is claimed that this is but one of a series of trans actions of similar character said to total nearly $100,000. .Saunders, whose present home is Salt Luke City, und who duriui? his everal years resilience in Crnuts Pass picked up a wide ncniiaintunce in Medford and the valley, announced through his lawyers after the indict ment was brought (hut lie will return to Grants I'nss, face the charge and light it. Sanders eiitnc to Grunts Puss in 1909 us u representative of minority stnckholds of Ihe Golden Drift Min ing company. Through the represen tation of Sunders und subsequent court nction the Chicugo-Iiogiie River company was formed. This company went into brankruptcy and the the Rogue River Public Service Corpora tion was organized and absorbed the Hoguc River company. As n result of mismanagement the Rogue River Pub lic Service cormiraton went into the bands of a receiver in June, 1917, in the United States district court. The indebtedness of the eororn- tion was upward of a million dollars, while nn appraisement of the assets bowed less than $150,000, no in- ome, and the property in bad shape. The property was sold March 30, un rler court order, but it was so badly involved that it was bid in for tiie bare amount of the receiver's ex penses. 10 TAKE IN The business men of Medford must prepare to huve the men now employ ed in their places of business taken for essential war industries. A com munity labor board will soon be or ganized in this city under government allspices to determine just what men will be taken from business concerns and other work classed as non-essen- ial war industries, in the adjustment that will take place here. 1 he above information was bruimht back from Portland bv Milton S. Janes, the local federal employment agent, who lust week attended the conference of federal employment agents of Oregon with representatives of Ihe department of labor and Wil fred S. Smith, state director of labor. All unskillml workers who are engaged in non-essential business will , transferred, according to Mr. Junes, who received instructions to if nb his territory thoroughly for every available man nnd to help bring busi ness men generally to rculie that the time has come when America must get on a war basis. The business men will be asked to substitute girls and women for men workers in non essential industries. BED CROSS EXTENDS TOKIO, Thursday, Sept. 12. (liv the Associiited. Press.)
