GOMPERS COMING IMPORTANT EVENT SAYSRONDON POST LONDON, Aug. 29. The arrival In England of Samuel Gompers, president of tho American Federation of Labor Is an event of considerable importance, the Morning Post Bays. "The name of Gompers," it adds, "is one to conjure with in tho United States. Thero is keen rivalry between different sections of our own labor organizations and 'between the Brit ish and French for the honor of, shall we say, bringing Gompers out. But it is certain that he and' his col leagues will attend the trades con ference at Derby next week at which the question of war aims will be raised. Up to this time all attempts to lay down a definite policy for the allied labor movements have failed (because Amorican labor was not in cluded. o iniornauonal socialist move ment exclusive of or antagonistic to American organized labor, can hope to prevail and Mr. Gompers may be the destined instrument of not the least service America has rendered the allied cause. "He arrives at a decidedly good moment for the peace by negotiation Internationalists .have, like the Ger mans', overreached themselves and are cm the run." ; : i '. IE WASHINGTON, Aug. 29. Nomin ations of nearly 20l00 postmasters for cities, towns and villages in all, parts of the country were sent to the sen ate today by President Wilson. Most of tho nominees are present postmas ters continued in offlca for another term.. : ; .. ijJVJ. 1 . TODAY'S MARK0S Portland Livestock PORTLAND, Aug. 20.
