"Madame you cannot keep that dog here as It's against our rules," said Mohr. "The abBurd Idea!" was the indignant re sponse. "Why, this is a house dog." H. A. Thierolf arrived home this morning from a business visit at Sacramento and San Francisco. The army recruiting offices- at Eugene and Roseburg have been or dered closed, it is said permanently, and tho recruiting non-commissioned officers In charge ordered into active service. It Is reported that all army enlistments will be by the draft route hereafter. The marino recruiting of fice here has been practically closed for over a week, as Sergeant Hill re ceived orders to recruit no more men' until further orders after the passage of the new draft law. The county draft board has receiv ed notification that male stenograph ers, especially those who have had training along legal lines and who are capable of limited or special mili tary service are wanted by the gov ernment in large numbers. Men pos sessing such qualifications should present themselves to the draft bourd by August 31st, on which date the period for volunteering will cease. Mirny Guns Captured The town of Miruumont appears to have been surrounded by the Brit ish. ' The British arc reported to have reached Iiiefvillorn, one und n quar ter miles from Hupauine. Fighting is going on there and in the vicinity of Mory, sonic distance to the east of Arrus'-Ilupaume roiul. A battle is raging furiously in the vicinity of Hihucourt und Sapignics. The Germans are trying desperately to save Iiapaume. ' There was some heavy fighting in Flanders this morning on a small scale in tjie neighborhood of Dra noulrc ridge, in the Lys salient, which is reported to havo been captured by the Germans. , On the other hand, the British gain ed some ground in 'the same region and the fighting continues. Many more prisoners have been taken ev erywhere. . Last Night's Fighting The battle continued successfully for the allied arms last night. The British advanced everywhere and the enemy suffered heavy defeats. Achiet-Le-Grand was reported taken late yesterday after heavy fighting. The British advanced be yond Blhucourt. At the same time the British still were driving the con fused Germans before them east of Henin and further south at St. Leger and Ervillers. Sharp fighting has taken place along the Irles-Grcvlllers road. The Germans are clinging to Miraumont on the Ancre northeast ot Albert, fighting desperately. German prisoners say that It was expected that the British would stop at the Arras-Albert railroad and the unexpected success against them had confused tho German forces. Tired Troops Sent Hack Tired and depleted German divis ions that had been withdrawn from the battle since August 8 are being rushed back into the fight.. Troops from the enemy's reserve divisions, which had been held for counter attacks, also have appeared along the front. British advance troops at one time last night reached Saplgncs, just north of Bapaumc, but they were pushed back slightly by an enemy counter attack. They are reported to be re-attacking this village. Be hagnles, just to the north, has been taken. The third and fourth British ar mies have since August 8 captured more than 30.000 men. The prisoners counted since August 8 total 20,140 men and 598 officers. 10410 Killed at Once North of the Sommo a large num ber of guns have been captured. They include complete batteries ot howitz ers and trench mortars. Immediately south of the Somme 12 guns have been taken by the British. South of the Somme 1000 Germans were killed In one combat. They were closely huddled In front of the Brit ish, Instead of being in the customary open order. The allied casualties are very small. Tanks participated heroically In the fighting yesterday, it is reported, One engaged in a duel with a battery and silenced 'the German guns. An other group of tanks co-operated with a group of airplanes when the latter attacked German anti-tank guns that bad been strategically lo cated at the head ot a gully thru which the tanks bad to go. One tank suffered seven direct hits and ajt the crew were wounded except the pilot, who kept .the monster running,, fin ishing off a machine gun nest, and brought the wobbly, badly damaged tank and -wounded comrades back safely thru the enemy fire.
