He is well lik ed and popular, beinjr regarded as an efficient officer as well as still r laiuiutr his fine tcrMmal (pia)ittcs," Further testimony as to Major Kelly's military efficiency comes in a letter from Lieutenant ,1. l ltij-er of the motor transport service of the 'American army in France, to the Med font lodue of Klks, of which he is a nicmher. In part he write: "I had one piece of jjood luck since rominjf here. Almost the first per son 1 ran into was Judije Kelly, or rather Major Kelly. GHXKIf AL VOX FKAXCOJS has lici'ir .(JiKi.iisspd in (lisfi'nii'O by tho kfiisor Ixcauw of tlio defeat tif tho (JeniiaiiH in the sooond battle f tlio Marno. Whonovor a ilan fails, tho (Icniians have to take it out on something even if its only a oathodrnl. Wo wove told that the battle was under tho direction of tho (Ionium Crown IVmeo and that the Kaiser, after ap proval of Ihe plans of oompaigi) watohod the laiujehing of the drive from safe distance. Does any one suppose that if the I Inn drive had re sulted successfully that ioneral Von Francois would have received any credit? No, the Crown 'Prince would bo the hero. Why not, then give him tho credit for tho failure, instead of i'indiiifr another scapegoat ? The Crown Prince's army made tho least progress of the five (lei'inan armies driving toward Paris at the out break of the war when halted by the first battle of the Manie. A severe defeat was then administered to the Crown Prince's army in the Argonno but although Von Kluck, and other generals lost their official heads, the Crown Prince kept his command. Again t he taking of Verdun was .scheduled for a Crown Prince triumph but the long and bloody seige resulted only in costly sacrifice of (iorman life Verdun was never taken. Tho chief of the (Jernian staff lost his job but the Crown Prince kept his command. All during 1917 the Crown Prince hammered at the Chemin-des-iJamos losing over 100,000 Germans and gaining no ground. Other generals again wore made the goats but the Crown Prince survived a hero without a victory. At last came the Gorman offensive of May 15 and the Germans again reached the Marno only to bo hurled back in July. Tho brief triumph of the Crown Prince proved to be only one of Foch's traps and his beaten and decimated forces are having hard work to get back to their starting point. Such is the brilliant military record of the royal hero of the llohonzollorns none of whom ever get near enough a fight to smell powder and who like King James, view the battle from afar to grab the gobs of glory when there are any, and pass tho buck for defeat to some blameless and helpless subordinate. JACKSON COt'NTY IMiICK IXTKHPHKTIXO HOARD JULIAN ELT1NGE AT PAGE TONIGHT JAP LINER RESCUED Julian Kltingc sinning in "Coun tess Charming," which will be seen nt Page thAitcr Wednesday nnd Thurs dny, was born in Butte, Mont., but his parents moved to Boston, Mass., while he was still very younjr and it was in that city that he went to school nnd spent the gTonter part of his child hood, lie was forced to go to work at the eurly age of. fourteen. The story that he is n llarvurd man doubtless owes its origin to the fiet that Mr. Ellinge, whose real naineby the way, is William Dalton, belonged to the Boston Cadets, n military or ganization, many of the members Of which were Harvard men. The Cadets wej-e in the habit of giving excellent uuialeur productions yearly and it was at one of these, namely, "Miss Simplicity." that Julian Kltinge' gain ed his first notoriety as a female im personator. During- his whole asso ciation with the Boston Cndets, Mj Eltinge was associated with a Boston wholesale house. But his talent was too great to be "hidden under a bushel," and it was not long before he made an npHnr nnec ut the New Aiusterrnin Hoof in New York City, and later journeyed to London, where he was seen in l'JlMi at Ihe I'nluee theater. .Subsequently he appeared in sever al vaudeville engagements, receiving' sometimes as much as $1,000 or $1, ")00 a week. His success in vaude ville led him still nnother step up the ladder of success nnd in "The r'a-s-cinating Widow," in the dual role of Mrs. Monte nnd Hal Blake, he scor ed a phenomenal success. This was at the Liberty theater, New York City in Hill. WOMEN TEACHERS DEMAND INCREASE LONDON. July 31. A Canadian relief vessel today was on its way with the 176 passengers of the Osaka Shoshen 'Kalsha passenger liner Canada Maru which grounded in a fog yesterday as she nenred the end of a- run from the orient with a cargo said to be worth' about J4.000, 000. Wireless reports received here said that altho the vessel was being pounded rather heavily at times, she was in no immediate danger. She was reported to be still wedged fast on the reefs with her two forward 'holds full of water. Marine men last night said they thought the boat could be floated.
