ME1JF0RT) MATE TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, ORFXJON, SATURDAY. .1ULY in, 101ft PACfB FtTtS BOYS AT THE FRONT SERVING UNCLE SAM (The Mall Tribune will publish In this column each week interesting let ters from our soldiers and sailors and news items concerning their move ments. The Association ot Mothers, Wives and Next of Kin requests that items for publication be furnished to Mrs. M. C. Barber, chairman ot the press committee, not later than Thurs day of each weeok.l The association- extends Its dcep1 est sympathy to tho parents ot Ern-, (st Adams who was killed in an air plane accident on an English field a few weeks ago. Altho he had been In . the service only a few months he was called upon to make the supremo, sacrifice- tor his country and pride must ever be mingled with sorrow In'such a death. The following letter from Ernost Carpenter Is one of tho first to be recoived from tho 318th Engineers: Juno 9th, With tho Colors." Dear Father and Mother: Yester day had a letter from Carrol. It was two weeks in transit. No doubt gome letters will he lost, hut if they are I hope they will bo mine to you Instead of yours to me. Home letters are the biggest thing in the world to us follows right now. It Is difficult to write a letter without disclosing something that will be censored, but you may foel assured that everything is all right with us; plenty of good food and facilities tor keeping clean. Tho water in this camp Is piped about so that it is not difficult to wash clothing and a fine stream nearby affords us a good duck every morning. ' The trip across country by rail gave us a glimpse of rural scen ery, rolling land, divided Into small farm lots with hedges for dividing lines. Clover, grass and rye wore the crops I saw. Each simple home seems to have a cow or two, a few goats or sheep or possibly a horse. These with a small garden patch give the people an existence. Some who harbor a hen or two can celebrate on festal occasions such as Thanksgiv ing, with an egg. ' The peasants wear wooden shoes stuffod with straw to fit various sizes of feet. Their food is principally sour wlno, bread and milk or veget able soup. Parisian styles are not in vogue here and "chick" French girls are a minus quantity. - This a. m. I heard a coo-coo lit erally coo-coo", but notes very sweet. Ever since we came the weather has been perfect,, warm days, -cool nights, scarcely a drop of rain There aro nil kinds of Interesting places about here, old towns, old buildings and a short distance away Is an old castle built in the fourteen hundreds. It's a regular old story 'book In Itself. All places In this sec Hon are more or less Intimately asso- . elated with. Joan of Arc. By the way, she must have been vastly bet ter looking than any of the French dames I have yet seen to inspire the populace as per history, Theflelds and roadsides are beau tiful In this part of France, red pop pies especially and many other kinds of flowers grow In profusion every where. Highways are universally woll constructed and llnod on both sldos with -big trees. There is quite a scattering of pear, apple and some cherry trees, hut I have yet to find a fruit tree with leaves. They are al most eaten up with aphis and bllg.'.t I saw a few strawberry beds but they ' are scattering. Dried prunos are a great food with the ovorseas forces and the only fault we find with them is that there are not enough of hem. How long we remain here I -. do not know ana could not tell if I did know, Tho Y. M. C. A. Is ovorywhero and Is a real Ilfesaver -with Its hall for entertainments, gatherings and Its writing materials always ready for the soldlor boy. We can also buy canned fruit, candles and smokes very reasonably, too. It is almost impossible tor us to get the dally news and we would 'bo unable to read it it it were not for the Paris edition of the X. Y. Herald Earl York comes Into tho hospital almost evory day. He Is looking wel and doing fine. All the boys -are working like nailers on a construc tion job. Hope to hear from home soon Ernest. Medical Department 318th Engineers, Mrs. R. W. Clancy received word Thursday of Captain Clancy's safe arrival ovorseas. Ho left Camp Lewi: three weeks ago with the :101st Am bulance corps. Thrco 'Medford, boy "re In the samo division Winston Varrce, Harry 'Worlmaii, and .Milton Schuchard. Their parents are nil happy to know that they under an officer so well fitted to care for them. I.eland Noe has written his moth er that his reglmont, the remnant of the 65th artillery, has been Issued tholr "t'n hats" and experts soon to he on the firing line! An In teresting sidelight on the helmets Is that (.hey were manufactured by the Ford Motor Co.. U. 8. A. No won der the boys call thorn "tin!" June 6, 1918, With the Colors. U. S. S. "Aeolus," Navy Yard, N. Y. Dear Father and Mother: Your letter Just received and was more than glad to hoar from you for the first time In nearly a year. I leave port soon so if my letters do not come regularly it is not my fault. 1 write as soon as I get In port. 1 did not got any of the things you sent me as our mall service is very uncer tain. There is no possible chance for us to get home while tho war lasts. Do hot worry about mo for I am al right. Because they got the "Lin coln" is no sign they will got us. The Aeolus" Is Just like tho "Lincoln," an ex-German ship. w get them instead of them gottlng us. I write as soon as I get In port, don't see why you don't get my let ters or me yours. Hoping you will get this, I remain, your loving son. Clyde Buckmaster. Friends of Ann Hamilton aro do- llghted to learn of her safe arrival overseas. Miss Hamilton is the daughter of Rev. W. B. Hamilton. Sho recently enlisted in the Ited Cross as stenographer. The Association of '.Mothers, Wives and Next of Kin will hold Its regular meeting in the library next Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. A largo atten dance Is desired. Sunday afternoon, Somewhere in France. Dear Father and Mother: I will write you again, this time at some greater length If possible. As we are not located in any one place for any length of time will try to tell you about this country and the people here. To begin with we had a fairly good trip considering the time of year. The water was not very, rough and everything went fine and dandy. Some of the boys were sea sick and could not eat or keep anything on their stomachs. As for myself and Ed Faucett, we were on the deck most of the time enjoying the trip and eating three meals every day. The afternoon land was sighted It was not long before the shores of France came Into view. Such a con trast, not much room for comparison in Judging France with" the good old U. S. A. Most all of the cottages, villas, barns, etc., are made of plas ter and stones and even some of the older places consist of skeleton frame work with mud and straw. One of the farms whore we billet ed last week was built in the 16th and 17th centuries, still standing in fairly good order. Another place was erected In 1849; I remember so well becauso It was the year father was born. The country here Is very pret ty, consisting of hilly land witti evory space that Is tillable under cul tlvation. Thore is lots of clover, al falfa, grass and vetch grown her?, but not very much .grain as I expect ed to see. Wheat is not grown hero very much for some roason. It rains here lots during the sum mcr, sometimes for quite a length of timo. One of the boys In the medica corps was telling me that last year It rained for two weeks without pause. I guess lie knows as bo wears two service stripes. Thore Is one serious drawback to this country, and that Is tho water supply. Water hero is very scarce and very hard to get. Some of the wells hero vary from 21)0 to 500 feel in depth. Then the water has a flat tasto and does not satisfy one's thirst. The French people rely cf l their wines for their drink and it is nut an uncommon sight to see men and women drinking In the open street. Even the kids enjoy the same privilege. They seem to think It strango that we drink water, but such Is the case, and good or bad we havo to make the best of it. Tho people here have some very queer habits, so entirely different from ours at home. Such odd looking carts and farming tools and Imple ments; such queer ways of farming their places; most of them seem to bo several years behind the times In that respect. Wood Is a scarce article. They all bum brush such as we trim off tho pear trees at home, and ft is quite a serious offense to cut down a troo here, even a very small one as the French people are very careful of their trees and when one dies they plant another In its place. My address Is Co. B, 4th Engineers A. E. F. via .V. Y. Well, father and mother, I don't know any more news to write about. I hope you are both enjoying better health than when I last heard from you. When you see any of my friends or neighbors give them my best re gards. I am In good health and feeling fine so don't worry about mo If you don't hear from me regularly. I will close for this time. l.ota ot love. Your soft, Sherman llnynes. 8. R. Richardson and T. E. Daniels the former rival clothing merchants. returned lint nluht from (heir nutlir-: al Prospect flnce last Tuesday.
