The Association ot Mothers, Wives and Next ot Kin requests that Items for publication be furnished to Mrs. M. C. Barber, chairman of the press committee, not later than Thurs day ot each woeek.) Somewhere In France, May 14, 1918. Mrs. M. Purdln, Medford, Ore. . Dear Mamma: I hope you are all well. 1 am getting along tine and we are having good grub and all of that. but believe me, I sure would like to be In Medford and sticking my feet under Dad's table once more; then I would be the happiest boy in the U. S. ' All of the boys are sure fat and ljnppy. I have not been working very hard lately. I sure hope Dad wins in the election. I see In the papers you and Babe have taken out (100 Liberty bonds apiece, and sure am glad of that. It I were In the states I would take out another (150 worth, but Instead, as soon as I can, I am going to send $15 or $20 home each month so that I get get a decent start when I get home. I guess I have wrltton a whole vol ume already today, and am about half thru with letter writing. All the boys are anxious to get on the firing line by the 4th of July so we can celebrate by snapping a Hun. Well, I must close now and write to Lyle and Angle. y Love from DEWEY PURDIN, C. A. C, Battery 3, 65th Artillery, American E. F. The fourth of July is our lucky day. In '98 the Spanish fleet was de stroyed in Guantanamu Bay on July 3rd, just in time for us to celebrate the 4th with vim. The nine hours difference in time will permit us all to celebrate at the same time. Go to it and get the Hun and don't let the (Hun get you. boys except us who were transferred. Wo will have to wait until next month for ours. Then we will have it all in a hunch. I guoss you will have to wait until that time for those pictures. Our new camp is located out -at Vancouver about a mile, In a big pino grove which makes tt nice for sum mer time. It was awfully hot hiking today. There are a lot of trenches and dugouts such as they have In France out here In the woods. They were dug by the SISth Engineers now In France. They are just like the ones you have seen In the moving pic tures of the French front. It was sure interesting going thru them. The boys around here are all "raring' to go to France. I sure hope you can all come up for the 4th of July as you suggested. I thought maybe that it you didn't I could get a three day pass and come home. They have a rate now of a cent a mile for soldiers. At that rate it woufd only cost me $3.65 to come home. Believe me It would certainly be worth ten times that much to see you all again. We bad macaront for supper tonight whtch struck my spot but believe me it wasn't cooked like mother used to cook It. When In the field we carry a first aid kit which Is a belt strapped round the waist with about a dozen com partments containing medicine, ban dages, etc. Instead ot carrying rifle we carry a 45 Colts 'revolver strapped to our side which makes our load weigh about thirty pounds be sides our -blankets. One thing, we have got to keep clean and healthy. Every morning before turning out to drill we have to have our shoes shlned, our leg gings washed and be clean shaven Fat (Raymond Trowbridge) wants to know if you will phone his folks and have them send his razor strop and four bath towels. He just wrote last night and forgot to ask for these things. My new address is Louis C. Jen kins, Medicine Attachment A. S. S. C. Vancouver, Wash. Another family with all the boys In. J. B. Watkins, Central Point, haB all three of his boys in service. Fred Watkins is now In Seattle, just en listed and not yet assigned; Ray Wat kins is In Waco, Texas In the cavalry. He has been three and a halt years in the army. Itoy writes from Franco. Somewhere in Franco, May 14, 1918. ' Pear Sister: Just a few lines to lot you and the folks know I am well and feeling fine. Never felt much better in my life. The only thing the mat tor with me Is I can't talk these peo ple's language. How Is mother, Dorothy, dad and all? Well. I hope so anyway. Did you get the picture of the company and could you find mi! Where are Fred and Ray? I have not heard from either. We are working every day and every one of the hoys In the company is enjoying life only a little lone some. The feed is O. K., but a good home made dinner would taste good. I expect I had better quit as it is almost time to go to l ed, and will write again soon. Wltbing you a happy dream and a good night's rest, good-night. Love Jo mother and all.
