department of agriculture, who has
charge of the war garden work in

subject of his address will be 'l'on
Irol of Insects und Conservation of
Ciurdctis." .
I find the war garden situation in
Oregon very encouraging," said Air.
liutler, who lias just completed a tour
of the state. "All people who can do
so are planting gardens for economic
reasons. The interest in gardening,
of course, varies in different commu
nities. Where a community goes in
heavily for war fjimleninji Hint helps
win the war, especially in helping- out
the transportation problem. For if
a community can raise its own veg
etable needs less stuff hits to be ship
ped in to it.
''The big thing to bear in nnml in
southern Oregon in the way of Bur
dening is the exterminntion of. in
sects. It is poor economy to Work
hard and make a fine gurden only to
have the stuff planted eaten up or
stunted by insects." i

Military training will be a part of
tile course at the Medford high school
next year. This move was decided on
by tile school board'" at n Seciul
meeting lust niglit when Melviu Kll
cslnd, who tins been acting as man
ual training instructor for the past
month, wus hired ns the roguiur in
structor in muniiul Irainin nnd mili
tary training for the next school
year. The military training course
will be elective, but it is expected
that every boy student of the school
will gladly enroll for it next fall.
Credits will be allowed to those tak
ing this course, and besides the mili
tary knowledge to be gained there
will be a. big benefit from the physi
cal exercises incidental thereto.
The military training course is de
signed by the school board to in a
way take the place of football now
that because of the war there are no
big students in the school,1
The board contemplates leasing the
large hall in the natntorium for the
year for use in connection with the
military training and the general
physical activities of the schools.
Mr. Kllestad is -well qualified to
conduct tho course in military train
ing as he has had five years military
training, and Jeuves Sunday for the
presidio nt San Francisco to lake the
month's officers' . training course
which w ill be attended by many other
O. A. C. students nnd graduates.
The board last night also began the
preparation, of the annual school
budget which will be voted on nt the
coming school election, June 17. Two
new members of the board will be
elected at that time as the elective
term of Mr. Palmer will expire this
year, as will also the term of W.' A.
I'olger, who wus nppoiuted to fill a
vueanoy on the board. It is under
stood that Mr. Folger will not be a
candidate for election, and that Pres
ident Palmer is as yet undecided
whether to become a candidate for
reelection. .
