Dear Papa: 1 am somewhere In sunny old France, just where I wanted to be dree months ago. 1 like it fine here, we are quartered in a kreat big stone building. I am In charge of one room with eight men in it. It is a fine big room with electric lights and everything. I wouldn't mind, staying hero a long timo. The band Is getting along fine, we practice every day and pluy a concert outside every day for the men. The place where we are quartered ls,'ght In town, the men are allowed passes but they must be with a non commissioned officer. I have taken several men on pass with me since I have been here. There are lots of pretty girls In this town but I can't talk French so I don't get along with them very well. We can't buy tobacco over here, tho army has provided a way for us to get 'one can a week. When we go out on the streets the French sol diers try to buy our tobacco. We can hardly buy any candy or sweet (luff. I found a place where I could get candy but It cost one franc for throe pleces--that is 20 cents in our money. We aro getting good feed here. Wo aro getting good old U. S. rations For a while we wore getting English rations and we nearly starved. The Building we are staying In is un old building we are Btaying In Is an old old spears and armor used by the French soldiers long ago. I am well satisfied with the branch of the serv ice I am in. I think it is the best. I am learning to play my cornet bet ter every day. I am as tJiin as a rail after hiking so far, but I feel good We 'had lots of hiking to do during tho trip. Lot me know if you got my cornet. I want you to keep it until I get back. I oiled the valves and things so it will be all right. Aiaven't received any mail since I left '.New York. It has been nearly two months but really I havent' expected any. Today is Sunday and I am go ing to church services pretty soon The band is going to play the music at church. , . .
