Dltsworth Sr. made a business trip to the valley Monday and returned Friday p. m. Mrs. Joe Phlpps has been very sick with the measles but Is able to Bit up some some now. Her many friends hope she may fully recover soon. Miss Vera Roundtree closed a very successful term of school last Friday at Laurelhurst school and left for her home In Medford Friday. The Red Cross of Laurelhurst met Saturday with a large attendance and a picnic dinner. There were eight new members and $1.00 donation for the cause. Everybody was busy but all seemed to enjoy the day as it was an ideal day. Everybody come Sat urday as early as possible. Earl Peyton and sister Miss Pearl motored to Medford Friday P. M. and returned Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Peyton and chil dren, Paul and Ralph and little Juan. Ita leave for Aberdeen, Wash., In their car Wednesday, 23rd, to be gone a month for the benefit of Mrs. Pey- tons' health as she has been very sick since the middle of April and doesn seem to Improve much. Earl and Pearl with two younger children a home will take charge of the place till their return. AND VICINITY The patriotic fund drive began Wednesday morning this week, with 20 teams in the field, the entire town to 1)e thoroly canvassed, also Talent and Phoenix, which are In the Ash land district. Rev. C. A. Edwards is campaign manager, and F. E. Watson office secretary. Official headquar ters will he the same as those used for the Liberty loan campaign, and workers will be served with lunch eon by the ladles, who will super ylse dining appointments in Auxiliary hall. Beyond raising the quota for Red Cross, no fixed amount has been set for the patriotic fund war chest, but It Is the aim to make this replen ishing feature as large as possible in view of the numerous demands which will be made upon It. The Red Cross quota Is J5000. Donations may be specifically designated, but unless so stipulated they will be covered into the general war chest. It Is planned to expedite this work without going over the territory repeatedly, conse quently the open purso will speed up the canvassing machinery. Mr. and Mrs. H. L. ."Torwood, hav ing sold their property here, have gone south In search of a new loca tion. The first unit of a motor tour will be In the direction of San Fran cisco Mr. Norwood for several years was linotype operator in the Tidings office. The family home was the premises now occupied by T. W. Acklin on Nursery street The deceased was a pioneer of this state, having geen born near Lafayette. He was the father-in-law of Frank Kerremans, clerk In Enders store in the McCar thy block, years ago. The deceased was burled at Tillamook. His por trait, accompanied by a brief sketch, appeared In last Sunday's Oregonlan. Peter Spencer is the principal-elect of the junior high school. F. A. Brown, recently quite ill at his home on Granite street. Is re ported improving. F. H. Van Volkenburg of Elko, Xov., chief of the fire department of his home town, was In Ashland the first of the week accompanied by two associates, the visit here being inci dent to an inspection of timber Inter ests in this vicinity. The party are touring in a Reo car. They called upon Chief Robinson of the local fire department and were much Interest ed in the merits of the equipment at city hall headquarters. W. A. Freeburg has gone south on one of his customary trips to vari ous portions of Cs'evada and Califor nia. Miss Verna Haight, residing on East Mam street, music pupil of Madame Tracy of Medford, will give a piano recital here this month, the date to be announced later. . Perfection amor-g pupils of local schools has won for them special di plomas in county championship con tests, their record standing at 100 per cent. Hawthorne and junior high school pupils to the number of four are the ones thus honored, their names being Loraine Brookmiller Lova Buchanan, Alta Yokum, and Doyle Sullivan. Junior high has the enviable record of Investments ag gregating J10.000' by teachers and pupils in Liberty bonds, was savings and thrift stamps. Numerically con sidered, this standing leads any school In the county. Mrs. Charley McWilliams has joined her daughter Constance in a visit to relatives In the family of F. G. McWilliams, she having arrived early in the week from Klamath Falls. Brakeman Brown of tho S. P. has rented the C. II. Veghte family home on Gresham street for the summer.
