FORM Kit Oovernor AVcst, dciiiorntt u- uonm-ce for' United Slates wimtor 1ms lmule the iuiiii( proposal to .Senator MeNary, repuhliean nominee, tiiat both rH'raiii, from making a political caiiipnitfii, leaving tlie question ol' choice to the voters.. He says in his proposal: "A long and active campaign calls for aacrifice In time, money and' health, which neither of tin can well afford.- The time ami money had better be spent In other directions. When dollm-H are so badly needed to cure for our Hick and wounded on the field of battle, it seems almost criminal to neattor them to the winds in a polltcul compuign. Wo have both nerved tho people in public office. Friendly newspapers have spok en kindly of our few Rood (jualltie, and unfriendly ones have pointed out our weaknesses. The people therefore are fairly well advised as to our qualifications. "In view of this situation, let us join In making this a unique sena torial contest. I-et iih be able to report no receipts and no expenditures, either by ourselves or hy our friends. To tills end let iih do away with personal campaign, headfpiarters, and political managers, also with vertlsinK and speoohmakinK. Such an arrangement would leave the sen ator free to devote his entire time to his senatorial duties and me to engage In some war activity. We both wuld thus be rendering the best possible service to our country. The proposal is sound common sense. Hoth candidates have spent their lives in Oregon and both are well known. The record of each is an open hook and a heated campaign could add liHIe 1o public knowledge. In war time, a po litical fight is truly an economic waste. As was lo be expecfed, the Portland Orgonian, leader of the reactionary forces, opposes Mr. West's sensible sug gestion and distorts it into a selfish proposal to maintain a life-long friendship, just as it; has discolored and distort ed every act of Mr. West's career. It has never been fair, and because it was not, its virulent criticism and hostile abuse has strengthened rather than injured the former governor's popularity. AVhy (hies the Oregonian want a campaign? Can it be that it fears that without beating the tom-tom of preju dice, making the air ring with the customary claptrap of partisanship, the sounding brass and tinkling cymbal of political bunk, the people left to their sober judgment might vote for Mr. "West in spite of the 12",00() registered republican majority hi Oregon f" So that is the reason it wants a grand hurrah and a waving of the bhiodv shirt to rally all hands to the (J.O. I.? Jf t Oregonian and other advisers induce Senator MeNary to decline Mr. West's offer, and force a political fight, they can have it. Material in aboumlauce concerning the republican candidate has been furnished from republi can sources of unquestioned veracity--by the late Mr. Stanfield. Lateral Marriage PJan of Germany Is Worse Than Harem for Women ( By Winona Wileox.) WASHINGTON, May 21. Women who are alive to history in the mak ing1 perceive a horrid threat to the evolution of their sex in recent social developments in Germany, The Prussian war parly is tpiietly favoring polygamy ns a means of re newing (is man power for future wars.
