In the npper grades and high school, as the term is now used, must, in our school, ap ply mo3tly to wood work on the beqeb. and the various form3 f work of a constructional nature within the scope of our equipment. A boy In the grades or high school Is taught the care nnd use of tools. Ho is tausht how to mako and ap ply useful, common joints. He (s instructed in woocl-tiniahing until he can produce a finish equal to the finest put out in a piano factory If will take sufficient care and pride in his work. There is on Teasoii why from the a, boy in a manual training shop should "putter around,!' lounge on tho benches, talk, whistle or kill time in any way. In our school they are to be on tire Job all the time. The foreman in a shop would give a work man his check before the first period was over If he even attempted to es tablish such'shop-conduct as has fre quently been stopped in our shop in the past two weeks. There Is no reason whyo from the sixth grade on, or at any time in school life, the pupils should not have every opportunity to undergo typical practical experiences that will tend to fit them to make an intelligent choice of occupation. The pupil in the advanced grades above the eighth would be Justly en titled to register jt .protest If he be requested to continue yoar after year constructing Look-ends, coat-hungers, foot-stools, etc. There are shop con ditions, however, where a workman works for years making only one of the many small parts for some more or- less complicated machine. This however, is specialization and one of the points to be considered In fitting an individual to make a wise choice of occupation. The manual training shop is In tho high school, easily found and always open to visitors for questions and In spection. We deslro a closer acquaint ance. with tho peoplo from the homes of Medford pupils and shall expect a lively interest in tho shop, its pur poses, and its accomplishments, with in the year. R. C.
