JTEDFORD mm THlBTm M EDFOTCD. in 4 ELECTRICITY TO i PLAY BIG PART AT WAR FRONT WASHINGTON', Oct. 17. Electric ity, which has completely transformed individual life, is being used In the present war an (he greatest ' scale ever dreamed of. My authority Is Professor Louis I). Bliss, head of the famous Bliss.Elec trical school, out3ide of Washington, which had the unique distinction of furnishing to Uncle Sam last June the only complete enlisted company In the army reserve. Out of a gradu ating class of 135, 57 entered, the company, even the cook being a prac tical electrician. Lieut. Lewis, in command, is n son of the inventor of the famous Lewis machine gun. The second lieutenant is Prof. Clyde K. Creesy, instructor in mathematics. The company Is now "somewhere in France," in charge of army search light work. "To begin with," said Prof. Bliss, "two of the greatest factors in the present war are absolutely dependent upon electrical energy. The airplane is mode possible by its electrical Ig nition. The submarine is made pos sible by electrical motors. "lint nil along the line you find electrictiy used. For Instance, our army is going to be equipped with electrical trench lights, each run by a small storage battery, which will furnish n light about like Ihnt of an automobile. . "Searchlights piny a bis part. They are continually used at night to sweep No Man's Land, between the trenches. They are also, of course, used as he liographs for signal work. "The field telephone and telegraph and the wireless telegraph In modern warfare are familiar. Electricity used in operating drills for mining operations in the field, and also for the discharge of the mines exploded under the enemy. Ills guns are often trained, elevated and fired by elec tricity. "Wliat I said of searchlights and big guns applies equally to the navy. But the big wonder of the navy is going to be the American electrically driven battleships and cruisers. We have already a proof in the American naval collier Jupiter. A steam tur bine drives dynamos furnishing elec trical current to motors which direct ly connect up with the ship's pro pellors. It Is probably the most eco nomical and elective method of driv ing ships. "The ammunition hoists to the tur rets, and the gun turrets themselves are moved by electricity. Orders on shipboard are given by means of elec trical signal bells and buttons." Portland Livestock. .j PORTLAND, O.l. 17 Cuttle I sternly; it 12(17.
