BY J. HERBERT DUCKWORTH. NEW YORK, Oct. 3. He con quered pain. Will that talilot place Gordon Ed wards' nanio Intho hall or famo? Whilo thousands upon thousauds .'iot wounded soldlois are writhing In aRony Edwards has appeared on the battlefield as an angel of morcy, with a simple chemical solution he calls Nlkalgln, which he has at last suc ceeded in having war hospitals adopt as a means of killing pain. He Is now 'Jno of tlio groa war heroes. Once a hospital orderly, Edwards has jhad a long up-hill fight. It is the v old story of the snubbed pioneer of inventor at last coming into his own. Edwards, now about 30, a gradu ate of Stanford, worked a few years as an electrical engineer. Later, while orderly in a hospital, ho heard doctors bemoaning the fact that there was no perfect annsthetlc for dentist ry. Ho determined to discover one. He plunged Into the study of medi cine. After a year's research he came across a long-forgotten formula for a solution that has remarkable anal- geslc properties. Almost Ii1ccloss. Edwards came to New York, al . most penniless, to go In for dentnl anasthesla, and get back some of his money. Then the war broke out. Jr September, 1914, while In the . Red Cross headquarters, ho saw his chance to serve humanity by conquer ing pain. Ho asked for a tryout at the hospitals, but was brusquely turned down everywhere. Finally ho Interested Miss Anne Morgan. With her letter of introduc tion ho visited the Vanderbilt clinic. There he was given oportunity to try his solution on an old woman with Kpainful leg ulcers that the physicians ,i, ; admitted were "a scandal to the pro fession." Nlkalgln killed the pain. Twenty-five other cases wero seccess fully treated in the same way. Encouraged, Edwards sailed for Europe, lie offered his nnasthesia to the French and lirltish governments. He was treated as a patent medicine fakir. Even the American hospital at N'eullly turned him down. Sym pathetic Americans in London and Paris helped him with money. Ht Started a producing laboratory In England and sent nlkalgln free to the hospitals. A few surgeons tried It and asked for more. Killed the Lockjaw. Fjiiiallya famous Japanese bacteri ologist in a Paris hospilal wrote that he had verified llie antiseptic proper ties of nlkalgln. It killed the germs of streptoccl. staphyloccl and lockjaw. But France would not lake It up. Again Anne .Morgan came to the rescue. She got Edwards a hearing with the Second army in Verdun. Nlkaygln was -.used on a poor sol dier whose whole front had been burned out wifli German flaming fire. Excruciating pain prevented tlressing the wounds. The bandages ,wero saturated with nlkalgln and painlessly removed. The. surgeons regarded this as a miracle. Now Edwards cannot make nlkal gln fast enough. Thousands of gal lons are used monthly In Trance. have been saved because sur geuii.yhave been enabled to treat wounds otherwise too painful to be dressed. Edwards and his support ers foresee a new era. the painless era. ' 1m a Ite-Klscovi'iy. Tim man who first gave Kdwards a chance at tho Vanderbilt clinic Is Dr. John C. Vaugbau, now on the Burgh al staff at Hellevuc hospital. "I remember Edwards well," said Dr. Vaughun today. "Ills solution . Is not new. It is quinine urea. Hut too much credit cannot be given Kd wards for re-discovering this forgot ten aiiathetic and applying It for the first time to open wounds. Qnlnlne-urea, or nlkalgin, is a re- Temarkablc compound. It Is both an . Bnasthotlc anil an antiseptic. It both ilmlnates pain and heals the wound ' "Edwards deserves the thanks of all suffering humanity, and especially of the wounded soldiers of the allied armies."
