Snnt. 17 Ashlnnrt day at the county (air at Medford this week Is Thursday; September 20, and Inasmuch as this city has had the -Round-up, the Chautauqua, and the pioneer and old soldiers' reunions this summer not to mention the Billings hill complications which aro ever with us it's the graceful and proper thing to do to invade Medford In a body at the county fair event. Tuesday will be entrance day, with no admission on the opening night. Wednesday is Medford day, with its accompanying free barbecue on a big scale. Friday is children's day, and Saturday Jackson county day in gen eral. Ashland girls ought to compete in the canning contest for the $50 prize offered by tho Utah-Idaho Sugar Other attractions are merchants' dis plays. Dancing every evening with muBlc by the noted jazz orchestra which was here from Portland dur ing the Round-up. Admission will be only 25 cents, The major portion of tho displays will be on exhibit at the Nat, thus team from Boll View will meet a team -company. vcnool exnioits ana CHILDREN'S DAY AT COUNTY FAIR Tha program for Children's Day at the Jackson County fair Friday is as follows: 1 o'clock, children's sports, blcycto race, boys under 15 years of age, Medford to Phoenix and return. May or C. E. Gates has provided the fol lowing prizes for this event: 1st place a pair of blcyclo tires value $10; 2d place bicycle saddle, value $7; 3d place a pair of handle bars value $2.50. Prizes will bo offered for other appropriate events which we are not able to list at this time, but they will Include such events as 100 yard dash for boys 16 or under; 50 yard dash' for girls 12 or undor; hand over hand race for boys 15 or under, 2 boys to a team, etc. Thoro will be a "Kiddie Kar" race for boys under 12, so be sure and bring your Go-Devils with you. 1:30 o'clock Canning' contest, Phoenix- vs. Talent canning teams. On Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 a team from Talent will meet a team from Phoenix, and on Thursday af ternoon at the same hour a canning BY doing away with any tedious rides over dusty roads to the fair grounds. Races being eliminated gives more prize money for distribution to mis cellaneous exhibits. A program of events will be printed dally. Ashland will have over 75 varie ties of grain, fruits galore, poultry and stock. A five-ton truck loaded to the gunwales with various ex hibits left here for Medford Sunday evening, the displays having been packed and arranged by D. M. Lowe, general director of the agricultural and horticultural foaturos of tho fair. More will follow by Tuesday morning. - Ed Staples has been tendered tho position of manager of the displays from the Asehland district, he being a "humdinger" In the arrangement of details, having had much experi ence in this line under tho old dis trict fair managements. The cream of the displays will later on be forwarded to tho state fair at Salem, the Portland Land Show, and the National Dry Land Congress at Dallas, Texas. from Eagle Point. Tho team winning a trip to the state fair will be an nounced Friday. 1:30, 3, 4 and 7:15 o'clock, Aitch Icy & Altchley Animal Actors con sisting of a mlnature horse and in telligent dog will give interesting performances. The famous Jazz orchestra of Portland has been secured to furnish music for dances at tho i.Vat beginning at 8:30 on each evening of September 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22. WASHINGTON, Sept. 15. That the government considers the food situation of the United States a grave problem Is shown by the fact that the food administration is now making a war emergency food sur vey of the country. Over one hundred homes In Ore gon aro to be Included in this survey, Miss Anna McCormick, representing the government In carrying on the food conservation campaign in Jack son and Josephine counties has placed 20 of these surveys In the homes of her district. An effort was made to seloct homos representative of tho va rious classes of citizens. Later on, if food conditions become more se rious, the survey made extend to every homo In the nation. The purpose of the (food survey is to determine the amount of food on hand In tho homos thruout tho nation and to form an estimate of the daily consumption of food. Ev ery woman who assists in making this food survey possible Is rendering the government a valuable servlco. Tho association has secured tho services of tho Jazz orchestra from the Orogon Grill of Portland, to fur nish tho music for tho dances for tho fivo days.
