In the ear of Rankin Estcs, well
known Sledfonl man and proprietor
of the Oaks pool and tfarj hull on
Front street, was' found 14 euaca of
whisky, and in another ear driven liy
a Portland man who rcfiisos to give
his name, was found 13'2 euse of
whisky. Altogether about 80 gullons
of whisky.
The arrests were followed by a raid
this morning on Kstcs' pool hall by
Sheriff Jenninpt nnd deputies who
arrested two men connected with the
place and after a thorough search
carried away as evidence a small
quantity of liquor.
There in a mystery about the so
called Portland prisoner. Ho refuses
to give his name or other information
ulmut himself. The car he was ilriv
iiir is a t'hulmers Six, and bears the
Ktuto license number 29118. The
owner of this number is repstered as
Z. I.. Dimmick of Grants l'ass.

arrests will probably follow. It is
claimed by the county authorities
and Hilice that Ksles has been in the
bootlcfrin business ever since the
prohibtion law went into effect, but
that they were never able to find
sufficient evidence heretofore to
cause bis arrest.
It is further claimed Hint Kstcs has
made numerous bootleiti); trips to
llornbrnok, one of which was last
Monday night.

Wimcr, W. J. Carpenter anil K. C.
Porter, all of Ashland, nnd who for
merly constit-utod the -police force of

Anderson, his deputy, were also on
the mountain, but were some distance

The officers were about to lock
the men in the city prison, but Kstcs
objected so strenuously to being
locked in such a filthy place and de
manded that he and the other pris
oner be taken to the county jail, that

They were locked up in the county

Wednesday morning while working
near Camp .". in the Crater l-akc
park, Waller S. Turner, of Klamath
Falls, foreman of the crew, was kill
ed hv an explosion of giant powder.
Three blats were et off and fired.
Two exploded all right, but the third
failed and Turner thought he bad not
fierd the fuse. Advancing to do so.
he was in elo-e proximity when it
exploded, killing him instantly, lli
iser, Mrs. Harry Stilts, of Klamath
Falls, was immediately notified and
will take charge of the remains.
