James Burns of Galls Crfeek was in Gold Hill Wednesday. Sirs." Ullman of Portland who lias been visiting at the home of her mother, Mrs. Enoch Smith, the past t.ionth, returned Saturday evening to her home. 'Mr. and Mrs. John Cook of Sams Valley were in town Tuesday. Clarence Cook spent Sunday after noon with friends in Gold Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Weston of Dorrls, Calif., motored to Gold Hill Sunday morning to visit with Mrs. Elmira Miller; they made the trip to Medford Saturday in eight hours having left Dorrls at g:00 p. m., arriving in Medford at 10:00, p. m. MrB. Laura. Hainmersley and son, Vernle, returned to this city Sunday afternoon after spending the week with relatives in Rogue River. It seems Impossible to keep our boys home yef, for as soon as they return, havjng completed one job near Medford, they telephone until they locate another, and then off again. Surely patriotism Is displayed by these, a few years too young to enlist. . Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Meritt had as their guests Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Vie- lyur Burcell of Central Point. In the afternoon an extensive auto trip was taken into Sams Valley and Ramsey canyon route to Rogue River and re turn by the Pacific Highway from that city.' The Central Point visitors returned late the samo evening. Mrs. P. Zana of Ashland came Monday to attend to business matters in connection with some of their properties in this city. ' ; J. Mrs. '.Charles Lyman and daughter Grace;, who have been visiting the past two .months at the ranch home of George Lyman, three miles north of Gold Hill, returned to their home in Los Angeles Tuesday morning. Considerable interest is aroused by the report of the presence of some "Standard Oil" men in the Sams Val ley district. ' Here's hoping it's for "good." H. A. Vogel, Ph. Mr. and Mrs,' Wells are leaving for Ilydnhnrg, Alnskac-whcro Mr. Wells will combine the duties of storekeeper, postmaster nnd school teacher for the United States gov ernment. ' Robert Smith, who has been em ployed at the Table Rock orchard for several years, left for his old home in Georgia. During Mr. Smith's long stay in this community he has made many friends, who regret his depar ture. , ' A crew of men with the big tractor from the Riverside ranch have beep engaged in plowing nt the Modoc pi chard for tho last few dn'vs. Many inquiries for oats ore being received by our farmers, one man representing the Twohy Bros, wanted 100 tons. -No less than five lite insurance agents have visited this section dur ing the lust month, their largest stock in trade. seeming to be the tell ing of how the agent 'preceding them misrepresented things. Tho country would probably be better off if the whole bunch were drafted into the harvest fields. ' The Jackson County cream enr will pass thru here on Wednesday hereafter instead of Sunday. Miss Florence Kincnde and Roland Flaherty of Agate, who were mar ried Inst Tuesday, are bath well known in this district, where a host of friends wish them success nnd happiness. Thomas Perdue of the Weed Lum ber Co. was over this way the first of the week in search of luborers for the lumber camps. Mr. Perdue claims that he made the trip in a Ford ear from Weed to this place, which is more than 100 miles, with just two and one-half gallons of gasoline, which is a marvelous record. C. A. Dickison of Sherwood, Or., noted as host to a party ot some fifty friends who met .on the river bunk south of the Nealon ranch, Monday night, August 111. The woods were lighted up by Japanese lanterns and liube bonfires, mnkinif it pos sible for the young folks to piny many games. About midnight a large packer of ice cream .and many fine eakes were served as refreshments, nnd all went away claiming this to be one of the most enjoyable events of the season., ' TALENT TALK Mrs. Edger returned from Crater Lake last Thursday. The little Shultz baby, who has been very ill, we are glud to report, is fust improving. Saturduy evening the rond was al most blockaded with a troupe of merrymukcrs, consisting of most of our young people, who wended their way to the river for a weinie roast. John Jones, who was taken to the doctor Sunday evening with a severe case of tonsilitics, has fully recov ered. Mrs. If, E. Lyman and daughter, Grace, of California, who have been visiting at the home of her hrothcr-in-luw, George Lyman, left for their homo Tuesday morning. Miss Grace will be greatly missed among the young people. A change for tho better has been noticed in the condition of Grundma Ldington. Work is being done on the roud between the Wilson and Moore ranches, which is a great improve ment, as by widening the road it is much more convenient for passing curs nnd tennis.
