J 5 (Special Correspondence) Evcuts have moved rapidly since our lust narrative, which left us feclins sym pathetically, as wc remember it, for the company thnt fell heir to our cast-off equipment. But in military ns well as in all oilier affairs, time is the healer of all things, and at his late dnto wo are glad tlicy have it instead of us, and wo now have no pangs of regret , at nil. It serves them right for not hnvinp; n captain that knows how to get all the good tilings for his company, too. A complete history of tlio 7th com pany would not bo complete if men ion of the transfer from Ft. Stevens to Ft. Columbia wero omitted, for it was the first time tho company broke camp mid reestablished itself in a new location, each man carrying his pack on his bnck and tho five nrmy inule tonms and combnt wagons bringing up the rear. It looked like a Sahara desert caravan trekking to Cairo. Word was passed along tho company street tho evening before that first call would be sounded at 4 a. m., breakfast nt 4:15 nnd ail tenls would fall nt 5 o'clock, loading to be gin nt 6 and take up the line of march for the dock nt 7. Every lie tail was carried out to the minute and nt 7:30 the gang plank was drawn and wo were off, 103 men iukI thrco officers and enough equipment to take us around the world. It is to be regretted that tho moving pie turo machine was not here to record tiiis interesting episode in tho career of the company, as well ns to show our first camp at F. Stevens. Tile boat, n government light house tender, was soon headed out into the river and in 30 minutes had crossed the broad Columbia, here over five miles in width. By noon the new camp was established, dinner served nnd everything in crfcct order. Elec tric lights were installed in nil tents, tlio company library even unboxed and put in order in n sopnrnlo tent willi plenty of light. It should lie stilt ed Hint all this is done by men of the 7tli company without assistance, oven to connecting up the wnter supply for Hie wash basins. Wo hnvo men of every calling, from n dish washer to an electric light power house en gineer, nnd it may be of interest to know thnt tho 7lh company has in fact supplied n man to run the elec tric plant here nt tho first, ns well ns a largo number of men in other ponnnncnt details. The regular sol diers arc being replaced gradually in nil places by the national guard, which would seem to indicato that wo nre here for nn indefinite stay. Numerous changes in tho non-com. staff have been made sinco leaving home, due to Scrgennts Powel, Pain ter and Cowgill being rejected in the physical exams. Corporals George Vilas, Kobcrt Wilson and Carl Ring er have been promoted scrgennts and Rodney Sehuler, .Code Hull nnd Frank Coleman have been appointed corporals. Mechanic Pierce has been put in cliargo of tlio electric light plant. Among the special details the 7(h company hns been called upon to fur nish is tlio one which mans (he sig nal tower far up in tlio hills bnck of the fortifications. Men of scciiil qualifications were culled upon for this work, those who hnvo nn apti tude for quickly learning signaling by ; wig-wag method being selected. The detail is in charge of Sergeant Jaipia nnd the personnel arc Corpo rals Bevendgc and Mckec, nnd pri vates Uunynrd, Wnite, Coffey, Spooner nnd Beemnn. Thcso men keep constnnt watch, day and night, over the river through high power telescopes nnd night glasses, aided by miiny search lights throwing Ihcir beams at night Irom both shores miles out nt sen. They have become so proficient in their signal work that I he detail of regulars has been will- drawn. Signal messages by the use of fines are exchanged constantly with the other forts many miles a way. This is in order that eoninninicution might bo maintained in tlio event oi the submarine telephone cables being destroyed. Alrcadv tho national guard com panics have taken over all tho sen try dav of the port and nil day nnd all niirht pace their lonesome bents nent good, for they cannot possibly mck these cerms which infest your wlnnJ m'flltnni. 5. b. o. nas oecn succcssiuoy h'c for Rheumatism for more than fifty years. Try it to-day, and you will find yourself at last on the right track to get rid of your Rheumatism. You can get valuable advice about tho treatment of your individual case by writing to the Chief Medical Adviser, Swift Specific Co, Dept. I At lanta, Gfc - -MM ,n,M"ui OttTCrtOtf, about tlio fortifications nnd reser vation. Each company furnishes the sentries on ultcrnnto days and 'the hours for each man while on guard duty ore two hours on and four hours off during tho twenty-four. Owing to the number of men in each company, nn interval of about ten days elapses between guard tours for eacli man nnd five days for each of ficer. Tho stern command, "Halt, who goes there?" may bo heard nt almost any hour tliruout tho long night vigil of the Medford boys ns they hold up civilians or soldiers trespassing oh forbidden ground. The busiest man in tlio post is Sergeant Don Newbury, who hns been appointed provost sergeant. Now, probably very few civilians know tho particular duties of a pro vost (pronounced "provo") sergeant. All teams and conveyances are in cliargo of tho provost sergeant, nnd all hauling of supplies of all sorts nro directed by him. Cnrlonds of lumber or conl, commissnry supplies and nil traffic of every naturo come under his direction. All trains nnd boats must be met with tlio mule teams nnd trucks and the supplies checked nnd hauled to heir destina tion. Carry-nils for the officers nnd families nro furnished thru him; if yon want your ice box filled or n trunk dclivored or a ouartcr of beef for tlio mess, just call up Sergeant Newbury nnd lie will hnve it done for you. Already ho is acknowledged to bo tho best provost sergeant that ever held the place here. A univer sity education, combined wih n will ingness to do things, will come to tho front even in tho position of provost sergeant in n fourth rolo military post. Your Unclo Samuel overlooks nothing in this preparation for wnr, ns far as the health nnd efficiency of Ins soldiers are concerned. In the throe posts nt the mouth of tlio river first-class hospitals are maintained, with competent physicians in charge, and every morning nt 7:15 oil men with real or fancied ailments report for treatment. Nothing more serious than colds has developed among the men of .Seventh company ns yet, nnd there hns been but Utile of that, no one being detained at the hospital or unable to report for duty. This week all men nt tho post hnvo been requir ed to have their teeth examined by tlio hospital dentist with a view oi' liuving them put in stiapn to cause no trouble later, when dentist facili ties may not bo as available. Many teeth- were .pulled which were beyond repair, nnd advice given ns to the work required to put others in good order. Tho government goes no fur ther than extracting teeth that win not be repaired. If other work is necessary, it must be done ut person al expense nnd by civilian dentists. Next week vaccinations for smallpox and typhoid will be given, when many will no doubt be unublc to re port for duly for n few .days. It takes twenty-one days to complete the typhoid vaccinations. The weather has been finu, witli no rain since we arrived, There is usu ally a warm fog in the morning, which disappears early in tho day, followed by a coed sen breeze in tlio nfter noon. Fires in the tents are always built nt night to make them comfort able. Many other interesting tilings have occurred which will follow in our next. Awaiting Motherhood women, aim oat without exception, are prone to nervous ap prehension when on the rood to mother hood. A woman knows that however many people there aro clone or dear to her, she must face the crisis alone. By the use of this penetrating; massage, the expanding muscles of tho abdomen re lax naturally when baby arrives. Tho nerves, ligaments and tendons beneath the skin are soothed; the tendency to morning nausea Is avoided, and the ex pectant mother enjoys days of cheerful ness. The nights are not disturbed with nervous twltchlnga and the crisis Is one of great happiness and less pain. Get a bottle from the druggist and write the Brad field Regulator Co., Dept.
