Rulph Turpin, self-confessed mur derer of William McCullistcr, whom ho sliot.nnd killed after a dispute over a trivial difference, Iius been brought hero from Klamuth Kalis, where lie was captured. His story of his flijrht after the hooting last Friday morning, is fill ed with unusual incidents. In nil points in which information is ob tainable from other sources, his story is corroborated. Between the time of the murder. about 9 o'clock Friday morning, and shortly after dark that same even- ng, he traveled over rousih hills a lslanco of twenty-five miles to his father's home on the outskirts of this city. Altho the home wns supposed to be watched, young Turpin entered, learned irom his father that McCal- lstcr had died, took a loaf of bread and a jar of canned fruit and left again, going south on the Pacific highway. oocs Thru Town. Turpin traveled the main road un til ho reached Gold Hill, . seventeen: miles distant, and had a sleep by the roadside. He went to a barber shop at Gold Hill for a shave. During the afternoon he left for Medlord, still keeping to the IVil'ic highway. He passed thru Medford Saturday even ing about 8 o'clock, when the streets were crowded. He reached Ashland and passed thru the center of the town about midnight. Ho stopped at a peach orchard near Neal creek, five miles south of sliland, for a nap. When he stnrted to resume his journey at about 2 o'clock he saw nn automobile ap proaching, and hid behind n cluster of rose bushes. The car stopped within fifty feet of his hiding place nd the occupants filled the radiator with water. Turpin recognized (lie men in the nuio ns Sheriff Lewis and Deputy Lister of this county, who wore re turning from Siskiyou enmity, Cali fornia, where they had gone in search of furptn. Hero Turpm left the Pacific, high way and struck over Green Spring mountain. Shortly past tho summit :ic was overtaken by an auto driven by a Klanialh Falls photographer named Miller, who gave him u ride into that city. Sunday nt Klumnth. Ho spent Sunday night in a lod ing house in Klanialh Falls, and the next morning went down lo the pas scngcr station with a hazy idea of getting out of town; where and how he bad not planned. At t ho station lie was recognized by a former Grants Pass man named York, who notified two special deputy sheriffs nearby. York pointed out Turpin to them and they started for him. Turpin insist that he simply walked around the tation twice, keeping the station be tween himself and the deputy slier ffs. After the second circuit of the dation the deputies, figuring they had lost their man, returned to their station in the railroad yards. An hour or so later Turpin started to walk across nn open field, and was again seen by York, who notified Sheriff Humphrey. On the way to the jail turpm gave his name ns Newton and said he lived at Ashland; but when York asked i, "How's Grants Passf Turpin replied without hesitation, "F.very- thing was all right when I left." Slier- ff Humphrey recognized linn from a scar on the back of his head and called him by his right name, where upon Turpin broke down and con fessed tho whole nllair. 1032 W. O.
