IiEDFOTTO lUiTTj TRIBUNE, ' ' IIEDFOIITX QTrcCONT, "TEDERDAY, ""XTJCTPST 8, '1917 GEST BUILT 10 BUILD AIRSHIPS BUFFALO, Aug. 8. Ground has been broken by the Curtlss Aeroplane company for the bigglat one-story factory building In the world' 1,000, 000 square feet of floor space to manufacture exclusively training planes of the United States army. Contracts call for completion of this great structure GO days from the time the survey Is made.' i This gives some Idea of the size of Uncle Sam's preparations for war in the air and the pressure being put be hind them. , Miracle of Construction. Up to noon July 28 nothing had been done about this building except decide that it would have to be built if the army is to have the training (Jane's it needs. At noon while all the other 15000 employes of the company were at their annual picnic, general manager W. A. Morgan sat down with a couple of assistants and the con tractors to work out plans. By 7 that night contracts were signed; Sunday morning surveys were started; Mon day morning ground was broken and materials for foundations began to arrive. In thirty days half the building must be under roof and In 30 more must be ready to install machinery and begin manufacturing. This miracle of rapid construction is made possible by a combination 'of good luck and American ingenuity. Nino Buildings in One?, The sticking point in all kinds of construction now, of courset ls steel. The steel trust is not accepting pri vate contracts for delivery , under 13 months and some Independents' want even more time. Where on, earth then could the steel for such a monster building come from in two weeks? It happened that the firm which has tak yyi the Curtiss contract had previously arranged to build nine large factory buildings of uniform size and had se cured the steel girders and beams for them. However, anybody that knows anything about building knows that steel fabricated for one purpose can only in part be used for another. . i This is where American Ingenuity came in. "Why not give up the idea of putting up a, bi(lldlng of conven tional, typo?" the engineers asked. "Take these nine buildings of uniform site, pupt them up side by side with the Intervening partitions left out and thus have under nine roofs' a single huge floor space. Of course the light ing won't be as good; hut these are war times, Uncle Sam needs airplanes and anything that will produce the goods has got to go." . .So In a few hours. modifications In design were made, contracts were slgued, telegraph wires got hot call ing together labor, forces and now work is being pushed with three shifts a day, seven days a. week in order that America may have her thousands of airplane on time.
