Miners, har vest hands unci lumbermen of the iniilillo west threaten to go on a sympathetic, strike unless deported I. W. V. members are returned to their homes in the Warren district of Arizona. A telegram voicing the inlention of a walkout of more than a quarter of n million men was sent from Chicago to President Wilson late yesterday liy W. 11. Haywood, secretary of the Industrial Woikcrs of the World. The message to President Wilson said that miners of Michigan had he gun a general strike, that Minnesota miners would follow and that harvest hands In North and South Dakota would fall Into line unless the men djeortcd from their homes were re turned, i ne move on tue part or Mr. Haywood was the result of summary dismissal from Blsbee, Arizona, of his attorney, Fred H. Moore. When asked what he proposed to do, Haywood said: "What else is there to do but accept deportation; can you tell me any way to beat their game. If Arizona can stand the domination of high handed officials I guess the I. W. W. will be able to endure it. "I have been forced to wire Presi dent Wilson that a general strike will be called In the middle west unless the men of Arizona are brought back to their families. When all the mem bers and sympathizers walk out, 250, 000 men will bo ldlei As yet I have received no reply from Washington. Suspension of harvest work, the I. W. loaders declare would mean the loss of thousands of dollars to the farmers and inactivity in the mines would prove a serious impediment to munitions manufacturers. TEUTON LINES ARE CAPTURED IN GREAT DRIVE (Continued lrom Page One.) TO SECURE BRIDES WAV YORK, July 31. United Stales Marshal Thomas D. McCarthy with fifteen of his deputies appeared at tho marriago license bureau tills afternoon where scores of young men of tho draft age, with their prospec tive brides were waiting for licenses and within fifteen minutes cleared the room and hallways of halt their num ber. Uo ejected from tho placo ev ery man who was unable to produce his bluo registration card. Another "slacker" rush for marri age licenses began yesterday, 351 be ing Issued. Some of tho applicants openly called attention to tho ruling of tho provost marshal eneral, Crow dcr, mado last week, that a man with a wife solely dependent upon him is exempt from the army draft whether ho married for love or safety. marine bases which lino tho shores of Belgium has also been In evidence and this purpose would be accom plished by any sweeping victory achieved on tho Flanders front. South to River I.ys. The attack of the two allied armies is marked on tho southern boundary of its field by tho Rlvor Lys, about 30 miles from the coast. "A wide front" Is the official nrltlsh expres sion describing its scope which ob vlously does not make It clear bow far towards the coast the thrust ex tends. The opening gives every evidence of being a major one, however, and It is cloar that It was successful in its Initial stages, the war office ac count declaring that "satisfactory progress' was continuing at all points. Many prisoners already have been ta ken. Drivo a Kiii-prtse. ine launching of tho drive was seemingly a surpriso to the Germans who only yostcrday were boasting that the Intensity of their reply to tho British bombardment had caused the British gunners to lossen the vio lence of their fire. It comes, how ever, after the failure of the tremen dous efforts of the German crown prince has been putting forth to break thru tho French front in the Aisno region. The French reserve force evidently is great enough not only to withstand such a powerful hammer ing successfully, but to alloy of co operation with the British in a stroke at another portion of the line. In addition, General Fetain last night made a successful attack on his own account on the Aisne front, car rying German positions 1500. yards wide on the Chcmln Des Dames, Roye and Eplne De Chevrcgny front, break ing a German counter-attack and cap turing more than 100 prisoners. MEDIATORS TRY TO END TIE-UP OF SEATTLE TROLLEYS SEATTLE, July 31. The strike of tho 100 motormen and conductors of the Pugot Somir Traction, Light and Power company for the right to Join national union entered upon its third week today with the tie-up as complete as ever, but with strong prospect of an early settlement of the strike. A board of three men, one repre senting tho strikers, one the traction company and the third occupying tho position of arbitrator, met in this city shortly before noon to discuss the strike. If. G. Brndlee of Boston rep resents the street car company, James Duncan the strikers and Dr. Henry Suzznllo, chairman of the state coun cil of defense and president of the University of Washington, is arbitra tor. The partisan members of the board will lay their case before Dr. Suzzallo, who is expected to make the award. The parties to the strike have signed no agreement to abide by the decision, but are morally bound. Be fore entering the meeting all three icmbers of the board expressed them- solvcs as confident of ending tho strlwo. Tho settlement hero will also end tho street car strike In Taconia, where 800 men are out. ALLIED SOCIALIST 9 SSLAY ENTIRE FAMILY M,()NON July 31 A dispatch received today by the Wireless I'res: from Amsterdam says: "The German authorities at Liejjo, Belgium, arrested, tried and sell tcnccd'lo death within'tlirce days an influential IM-gc merchant namei Cmncret, his wife and their two daughters, aged 24 and It years, on the unproved rliursre of espionage. The entente allied forces which launched their offensive this morning have advanced well beyond the shell shattered front line German renciios. In many places they have reached the second line defenses on a twenty-mile front of attack, accord ing to the early reports. The British and French troops went nto battle under cover of what per haps was the greatest barrage fire over seen during the war. The cntonto artillery Is moving for ward and the whole situation is satis factory in every particular. On Difficult Ground. Between Dixiyule and Goeslnghe the attackers reported they had se cured the two first lines of trencheB nfter having fought over the most difficult terrain Imaginable. Tho British again have captured La Bassoe VIllo, which thoy recently re linquished to tho Germans. Tho British and French forces aro facing a large concentration of Gor an artillery and fresh troops which have, been rushed up. Tho entente allies have established complete air superiority. Tho entente military officials say the moralo of tho Germans bore Is not up to tho old standard. Six Itavnrinn divisions were v. i 1 1 1 -Innvii and replaced as thoy were ilcnioralizcd by t lie inferno of fire. At one lmint the Ilritish chained thru their own barrage fire to pre vent the esciie of Hoeing Germans. also BESSEMER. Mich.. Military observers have attributed two objec tives for the entente offensive the capture of the Belgian North Sea coast, which has been used by tho Germans as bases for their subma rines, and to assist the hard pressed Russians on the Galician front. The battle front north of the Rivor Lys stretches from Warneton, on tho Franco-Belgian border to tho North Sea coast, the distance between tiicsc two points being thirty miles. In cluded In this battle area Is the fa mous Wytschaete - Messines front, where tho British on Juno 7, after ex ploding ono million pounds of high explosives under the German HneB, attacked on a nine-mile front and cap tured tho high riding, several towns, 47 heavy guns and more than 7000 prlsonors. It was also decided that nil organi zations affiliated with the interna tional should be invited provided they bad funned themselves into dis tinct groups. The national sections will be re quired to bind themselves to make known solemnly before tho confer ence is held how they intend lo ap ply the general decisions of iho conference.
