YOUTH OF 22 WIUST VALUABLE SOLDIER OF ALL Sickly Boy of Two Years Ago Now World's Foremost righting 1 Avia torHas Brought Down 45 Ger- man Airplanes Is Excellent Shot and Employs Original Strategy. BY BASIL M. MANLY. WASHINGTON, July - 24. The most valuable soldier in the world today is a youth of 22, who, when he was enlisted,'' wus u sickly-looking boy in the first 8tnc,eH of consuinp tion. Today, France would rather part with two whole army divisions than lose Georee Guynemer! Iln is the uncrowned "kiiiR of the nir," who has Brought down 45 Ger man airplanes. ' ' Ah one aviator is worth 1000 or diiiury troops, Guynemer has strate gically wiped out 45,000 Germans. No one soldier ever before approached this pale Frenchman's militury value, ' dipt. Amaiiry lie La Grunge, head of the French aviution commission, now in the United States, told me nl about Guyncmer, and explained the tactics that have won him undis puted supremacy ns a fighter in the nir. Said de La Grange : . Only 22 Years Old. "George Giiynemer, now only 22 years old, began training in Febru ary, 1915, on the eve of his exnmi nation for the Polytechnic school. "Ho was tall, slim, dolicate, s ono feared ho might have lung ttou Wo. He hud never gone in for sports, and was almost the lust man to be picked as, promising material, for a pilot. - ' -. . "He finished training in three and a half ,mpntlis, not remarkable,, when compared with Lieut. . Tetu's six weeks. : Less than a month-after his arrival at the front, armed only with 'an army rifle, he brought down his ft'irst enemy. "His plan of campaign against an enemy machine simple. . -i "Now rcmarkjbly skillful, Guyne mcr nlwnj's fries to place himself in 8 following position, so he will not be seen. With wonderful courase he approaches as near ns possible with out firing, keeping below and behind his adversary. ' ' "When he comes almost up to him (90 to 150 feet) he makes his plane rear up like a spirited charger and opens fire. Is Excellent Shot. "lie is an excellent shot and usual ly disables his opponent in the first round, but in case he does not he tries to break the fight by some acro batic manner (a half-loop, spins, or several sharp turns). "Guynemer is almost alone in the use of these tactics, as most of the other "Aces" (pilots who have brought down five machines) prefer to open fire at greater distances. Guvnemcr's tactics were also em- ,A ployed by Pegoud, the geratest flyer at the beginning or tne war. This story of Guynemer ought to bo an inspiration to cvory young American flyer. . . WAR BEGINNING OF END OF WORLD, SAY BIBLE STUDENTS Or. Stelzle Writes Interesting Review of This Subject Which War Has Brought Under Discussion Most Bible Students Believe Christ Must Return to Earth First. Wur has brought the widespread belief among religious thinkers tluit the eud of the world is at bund. They see the world-wide oonflu gration as the first stage in the final catastrophe that they believe will end nil things earthly. Recognizing this widespread feel ing as a matter of news, the Daily Hnil Tribune asked its religions ed itor, the Rev. Charles Stelzle: "Is there biblical basis for the widespread belief that the end of the world is at hand?" . '. : , . Dr. Stelzle says there. is not and he gives his reasons- for' believing there is hot. : Head what he writes, and son whether you agree "with him': ' '. I am asked: "Is there biblical basis for the widespread belief that the end of the world is at hnndf" , I know that many people believe there is. Thev point to certain prophecies in the bible that just before the end there shall be "wars ond rumors of wars," cyclones, fires, revolutions and upheavals of every kind. There is no doubt that the world is facing one of the greatest catastro phics in its history, and no one dares prophecy-how extensive it will be. The study of history does not help us much interpreting the signs of the times, for in this instance it cannot be snid that "history repeats itself." There never vet has been an "cud of the world." ' There are " three ' sources '' from which we may get light- upon this most important subject; first, from the bible ;, second, from the church, and third, from our own. reason. Naturally, the, .bible has a great deal to sav about the "end -of the world," and fortunately,, it is pos sible. for. the. average man to .under stand what the bible means. The secrets of God are not always revealed to the "wise men and the prudent" God has sometimes "re vealed them unto babes." .. . Upon one occasion, Jesus publicly thanked God for the fact. It is probably true, as some noted bible students have said, that con fusion has risen in, the minds of many because men have failed to dis tinguish between "'the end of Uie world" and "the end of the age." The history of the world may be divided into certain great periods, or ages., Each of these ages has ended in a great catastrophe like the flood, for example. It is well to remember that, most of the prophecies about "the end of the world are based upon the sec ond coming of Jesus, and the proph ecies concerning his second coining arc just as literal as those that had to do with his first coming. There are something like 300 dif ferent references in the new testa ment nlone to tht seoond coming o Christ. " All biblo students agree that Jesus is coming ugmn, out lucre is a gieu Tills Is a reproduction of n picture first prated n n book called "Forty Future wonders or Hcrpture Prophecy," puimsnod m lHflfl. TO LI AT DEATH PENALTY difference of opinion among them as to when he is coniin; Some insist thut the world will he come worse- and worse, , and tliu Jesus will appear to usher' in th thousand years of the millcinum luring which peace and righteous ness shall prevail Otehrs believe that the church will become responsible for setting up the millenium, and at the close of this thousand-year period Jesus will come to cull (he world to judgment. Fnr the largest number of bible Indents have the latter opinion, al though many evangelists and bible students believe Jesus may come to riltv If the thousand-year period of the millennium is to be taken literally, then the opinion of the "post-mil-lenniulists" those who believe that Jesus will come after the millennium compels us to say that Jesus cun not come for at least one thousand years. For no one would agree, in view of the terrible war now prevail ing, that we have entered the millen nial period. On the other hand, if the "pre millenninlists" those who believe Jesus will come before the millen nium are to be believed, it looks very much as if Jesus might come at any moment to estublish His king dom upon earth. For they believe that just the kind of things now happening will precede His coming to earth. . ' But this would not be "the end of the world" it would be "the end of the nge," according to the "pro-mil. lennialists." In any case, whether the "pre- millenniulists'' are right or the "post-millennialists," the end of the world, with the judgment Hint is fin ally to eome, must be at least one thousand years distant.
