FIRE FIGHTERS CALLED FOR TO CHECK BLAZE But little definite information was known at the U. S. forest offices in this city today rejianliiiK the forest fires situation thruout the county, but in the nbsenee of bad news it was presumed by Assistant Supervisor H. u. Jrostor that the situation was ut least no worse. A jitney driver who returned from the Prospect region where he mid taken aomo men lxt night reported to Mr. Foster this morniiu; that For est Supervisor Krickson who is in ehnrtro of fighting the two largo and the smaller fires in that torri'nry wanted Foster to send up to him ail th men that he could find. More Men Sent For. Seventeen men were sent up by Foster on Sunday, and l' mom will be sent today. State Supervising riro Warden Grieve is also in the Prospect district aiding in directing the fire fighters. As to whether the fire situation in the Prospect district is worse today, or whethur Supervisor Krickson needs the additional men he nsked for to replaco fire fighters who had to return to the city, could only he guessed at, in the absence of defi nite news. Supervisor Krickson sent yesterday for n dozen cross-cut saws and as many falling wedges to be rushed to him at once. Several new fires were reported in the Elk creek district on Sunday. They were small lire?, however, and Mr. Foster sent sit men from I'uis city to assist the rangers of that sec tion in working on them. CouKiir Creek Fire. The Cougar creek fire in the ltig Applegatc section is now under con trol, as is the fire on Anderson creek, No word whatever was received up to this noon from the manv 'lire burning in the Butte l ulls district. In the big Mill creek station for est fire in the Prospect district Sat urday the house ami barn of Karl Ulrieh's ranch were caught by the onrushing flames and destroyed. The barn was u large one and was filled with hay, according to reMrts re ceived in Medford. Part of the lu y and the household goods were h:i".icd to n plut'e of safety when it was seen that the spreading forest lire was going to claim the ranch as its victim HOW TO SECURE PROSPERITY. WHAT IS me dud to make the Kogire. llivvv Valley ii'ospei'u.s ? From 5d(K) In 10,000 caps of fruit, a year, the propor tion that other northwestern fruit districts secure from similar orchard acreage, would help do it. An annual quadrupled yield of alfalfa would aid in bringing about the desired result. Five or six times the present acreage in sugar beets would accomplish it by securing a beet sugar factory. An immensely increased production of berries, toma toes and garden truck to secure canneries would bring it. Lumber mills and box factories io supply box shooks and provide payrolls would make it a certainty. How can this increased production and these depend ent industries be secured f Only in one way by irrigation. "Without it, none of them are possible. For many years the people of the valley have been chasing will-o'-the-wisps to secure prosperity and ignoted the source before them. They spent, money to bring people in without providing occupation when they came. Thev planted large acreage ot orchard without water to insure the crop. They inflated land values, to get rich quick by pulling themselves up bv their boot-straps. They voted bonds to build railroads to mines when their one gold mine lay in the undeveloped or partially developed soil about them. They spend money in a gambler's choice to strike cil, but refuse to spend any to secure water. The vallev is not prosperous because it does not pro duce enough for the population, a'nd without water it can not produce enough. Yet every effort to secure water is met with stubborn opposition. Four drv vears, with deficient rainfall, ought to eoiv vince the most stupid of the need of irrigation. Even in the most favorable vears the moisture does not come at the needed season. It is inequitably distributed and seldom a drop falls at the tune needed. ater is crop insurance Another effort is under way to start preliminaries for irrigation, it, is hoped that it will meet little opposition The land-owners have stood in their own light long enough. Thev have not onlv impoverished themselves but their neighbors. They have depreciated their own property and stagnated the growth and development ot the valley. Without water, conditions will steadily grow worse The prosperous sections today are those belts under irriga lion. With the entire valley irrigated, there Avill be pros perity for all. IE 10 SPRAY I MembnrH of the Seventh Day Ad Vontinta' church of this oily, compris ing 20 inon and about sixty women and children, spent Sunday at Shorty Hamilton's ranch near Central Point cutting and chopping up the winter's aupply ot wood fur the church. Twen ty Horn were prepared, but this Is not enough and the work will he contin ued another Sunday in the near fu ture. The working hours were from ! a. ni. until f. p. m. The Adventisls reached tho Hamilton ranch from Medford In iiulos niul other vehicles Dinner and Hopper were served the workers at the home of Frank Itulh rock, near the Hamilton ranch. Tho men chopped down trees anil with tho aid of tho bumiIIiio wood aw of KIdor John .Mehan, cut It Into tier lengthn. Then they split the wood to the desired dimensions. The women and children piled up the wood In tiers and carried water to the men workers. The dny very hot. et.e more wood would have been prepared. The high and uniform tcmp-rn tare of the past few weeks has calls ed a rapid development in the larval and pupal stages of (he codling moth.' We find that some of the second brood moths are and ninny more will emerge within the next two weeks, therefore the fruit should he llioro- ly sprayed between now and tin fir-'t of August. The first eggs will he hntched about the first of A u;ust, and the maximum amount will eeuie on during the following ten das or two weeks and will then probably string along for the balance of the season. Due lo the lateness of the fruit riH'iiiug season it will probably be necessary to make an additional ap plication on Itnrtlctts and tdhci pent-, about ljth or 'JOIh of Augii.-t. Keep fruit- thoroly covered with spray af ter the first of Angu-t. I would like to suggest that some applications he made with double strength arsenate of lead in compari son with the regular strength.
