SIEDFOTTO MATE TRTBTJNT! irE17FOTlT3. OTEC10T. RATTTRD.VY. JUNE 2. 1017. PAOTC SEVEN E G. STEEL Last Sunday about 0:110 a. m. a party of 19 including Grizzlies, a few of their friends and two,'Mazamns" of Portland, left the Gurnett-Corey buildiujr on Kads' auto truck and were taken via Tlent up Anderson's creek from where tliey elinihed to the top of the Siskiyou peaks for the purpose of naming the mountain "Steel" in honor of Mr. William Glad stone Steel of Medford. Mr. Steel is widely known thruout southern and western Oregon for having railed the attention of nature lovers to the wonders of the scenery with which these sections are surrounded and for his untiring efforts to secure govern mental aid for developing that mar velous wonder Crater Lake. After climbing from peak to peak for about four hours the party reach ed a height which on a geological survey mup has an altitude of 5001 feet, and which is located in the southwest corner of section 3, town ship 09, range 2 West of Wilanimette meridian, approximately 8 miles south and two miles west of Medford, On the crest of this peak, their des tination, they found a tall towering rock, with a flat slab facing the southwest. Here they gathered, and melting snow for coffee ate their lunch. Then Llewellyn Dnvies, the Grizzly sculptor, chiseled "Mt. Steel, Grizzlies." Then followed the dediea tion ceremony at which an address was made by the president of (lie club Mr. Norcn, on "the purpose of the trip,' an,d an address by Mr. Uoscoc Johnson, "the Biography of W illiam G. Steel," then the christening act was done by Mrs. E. M. Bunce, who with a few appropriate remarks broke a bottle of Crater Lake water on the highest pinnacle of the rock. Deports of the day's proceedings were sign ed by those present and these togcth er with the biography of Mr. Steel were sealed in a tin can and laid in one of the sheltered crevices. The party returned home about 8 p. m. feeling that the day spent with nature, viewing the. wonders of the Siskiyou and Coast ranges was well spent.
