LEMERY IS FREED ON CHARGE OF BLACKMAIL It took a jury in the circuit court at Jacksonville yesterday but a few minutes to return a verdict of "not guilty" in the cause of George O. Van Xotta of Ashland against Attorney J A. Lemery of that city on a charge of blackmail. Van -Votta presented a letter from the Ashland attorney in which tho latter urged the payment of a bill amounting to 517.75, and aluo mentioned the fact that the plaintiff had been accused of stealing a horse collar from a Mr. Thomason to whom the original amount was owed. Prosecuting Attorney Koberts maintained this constituted a threat to extort money while Attorney I). A. Canaday who defeaded the Ashland attorney maintained his client had merely stated a fact and hoped to warn Van Xotta so he could avoid trouble. The case show d that there is considerable feeling among the elderly residents in tho environs of Ashland and it is probable the ca.se will lead to further court action.
