It was technically a knockout and will be credited as such. . . Last night Leonard, who scaled the lightweight limit of 133 pounds, was in splendid physical condition when ho entered the ring. Welch also was in fine shape and weighed more than his opponent. From tc first tap of the gong Leonard was the aggressor and while Welsh cleverly blocked many of Leonard's punches, the younger man scored henvily with 'inging lefts and hard right-hand smashes to the stomach and libs. Occasionally Leonard got his right over to the head with fairly good cttect and stung his opponent fre quently with swift left jabs and hooks to the face and jaw. The commenccmcr.t exercises of the Rogue Hiver high school were held in Owen's ball on Wednesday, May 23, before n large and appreciative au dience of citizens and friends. The graduates were Misses Dessie Sea man, Julia Martin, Kdith Owens, Anna Carle and Messrs. lister Wilcox, Ar- lie Hatch and .lames Kirk. The plat form whs tastefully decorated in yel low and green class colors and many bcnutiful flowers nnd gilts were re ceived by the graduates. The invo cation was given bv Mr. James Mar tin nnd the address by Professor Briscoe of Ashland, who spoke on the- recpiisilcs of a good cducntion. He is always a welcome speaker in Rogue River. The class song and va rious musical selections were given by the members besides piano selec tiousby Mrs. Terrett and Misses Marbhiland and Martin. Excellent theses were rend by Itcssie Seaman on "The Playground Movement;" Ju lia Martin, "Red Cross Work," an:l Lcslor Wilcox, "The Panama Canal." One member of ihc class has enlisted in the coast artillery and another is accepted for nurse's training in the children's hospital at San Fran cisco while at least two will enter for the teachers' examina-tion in June. Professor Harding prcsnted the di plomas nnd voiced the thanks of the teachers nnd graduates to the school board nnd patrons for their support. Mr. and Mrs. Harding nnd Miss Streets gave n picnic parly in the park for the'senior class on Thurs day evening. The young folks ap peared in fancy dress nnd after en joying a bountiful supper bad n very merry time. Most of the teachers have left town for their very well earned vacations. Miss Streets will sjiend the summer with her parents in Grants Pass, while Mrs. Parent will tend garden nnd chickens on her Gold Hill ranch. Mr. nnd Mrs. Dcardorff and baby leave at once for Kansas City, Mo., to visit relatives, but return to Ap plegate in the fall, Mr. Dcardorff having been appointed principal of the school there. Miss Isabel Martin will slay wilh friends in San Jose, Cal., having given up teaching. Mean while Miss Hurst has settled at Tolo where she will have charge of the school next year. Mr. Hoi'ton is somewhat better and doubtless will be nblc lo nttend to the fine lawn and flowers at the school all summer. K. Werty has returned home and has been busy in his garden. Heeknian of Portland, which is a very valuable addition to the shelves. Some new books of fictiun both for adults and juvenile have recently been added by purchase, while several were lately donated.
